Some Lesser Known Facts About Asmita Dey

• Asmita Dey was born and raised in a financially week family, where her father worked as a bicycle mechanic and earned around Rs 300 a day.

• In an interview, Asmita Dey lived in a mud house; however, her parents continued supporting her sporting dreams despite their limited income.

• During her childhood, she initially trained as an 800-meter runner. She switched to judo after attending a district sports trial, where coaches identified her potential in the sport and encouraged her to pursue it seriously. In an interview, she shared,

When I was little, we lived in our village in Tripura. My father used to drop me off at school. In my childhood, I used to prepare for running. I also won many medals at the district level. After that, my father also encouraged me to work harder and move forward. But later, I chose Judo. When I won at the state level, there was happiness in the family.

• Initially, Dey trained under Bina Debnath at the Belonia Vidyapeeth Coaching Centre, Tripura and she joined Tripura Sports School under the coach, Manik Lal Deb.

• After moving into competitive job, Dey joined the Sports Authority of India Regional Centre in Bhopal, where she trained under Yashpal Solanki and was inducted into the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Development Group.

• In 2022, Asmita Dey won a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Judi Championships, which became one of first major international achievements and established her as one of India’s promising young judokas.

• In July 2023, at the Junior Asian Cup held in Macau, she won a gold medal at the Junior Asian Cup in Dey won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category.

• In the same year, Asmita presented India at the World Junior Judo Championships held in Odivelas, Portugal. Although she did not win a medal.

• Later that year, she won the silver medal at the Asian Open at Kuwait.

• In 2024, Asmita Dey represented India at the World Judo Championships in Abu Dhabi in both the individual and mixed-team events.

• During 2023-24 season, Dey also won another gold medal at the Khelo India University Games.

• In January 2025, she won a gold medal at the African Open in Casablanca. This was her biggest senior international title before the Commonwealth Games and added valuable International Judo Federation (IJF) World Ranking points.

• In February 2025, Dey competed in the prestigious Paris Grand Slam, one of the toughest tournaments on the IJF World Tour and gained experience against elite international opponent.

• In March 2025, Dey represented India at the Tbilisi Grand Slam in Georgia.

• In December 2025, Dey’s father died after suffering a brain stroke. His death deeply affected her.

• About ten days after her father’s death, her mother convinced her to return to the SAI training centre in Bhopal. In an interview, she shared,

In October 2025, when I injured my knee, my father passed away 2 months later. My father and mother encouraged me a lot. Father always supported me. I used to lose many times. Even then, he would support me, saying that if I lost, it was okay, there would be a win too. Even when I lost, my father never let me get discouraged; his support brought me this far. My parents always pushed me forward. Mom doesn’t know much about sports.

• In April 2026, she achieved her best-ever finish at the Asian Senior Championships and secured fifth place in the women’s 48 kg category.

• She defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach in the final by scoring a waza-ari during the golden score period to win the gold medal.

• By winning the gold, she created a history and became the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

• After winning gold, in an interview, she revealed that she had taken loans to finance overseas training in Germany before the Commonwealth Games. She also appealed for financial support to prepare for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, scheduled in September 2026.

• According to the international Judo Federation, Asmita Dey was ranked World No. 48 after the Commonwealth Games in July 2026, making her one of the highest-ranked female judokas.
