- Asish Banerjee was chosen as the General Secretary of the University Students’ Council during his studies at the University of Burdwan, West Bengal.
- After completing his formal education, he was appointed as an associate professor of Bengali at Rampurhat College, Burdwan University.
- In 2001, Asish Banerjee contested the Legislative Assembly elections from the Rampurhat constituency in West Bengal on the ticket of Trinamool congress and won. He then served as an M.L.A. for five years.
- After that, he won from Rampurhat seat again in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021.
- In 2014, Asish Banerjee became a minister for the first time in the cabinet of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
- He was given independent charge as Minister of State (Independent charge) of AYUSH of Health and Family Welfare department in the West Bengal Government.
- That same year, he was appointed as the Minister of State of the departments of School Education and Higher Education in the West Bengal Government.

- He stated that he was not able to speak or protest against such actions.
- He also mentioned the Tarapith-Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA) in his note and stated that he had no role in the tender-related decisions of the TRDA.
- He also stated that he had no role in issuing cheques, approving plans, or giving no-objection certificates (NOCs).
- In his suicide note, he wrote,
I had no responsibilities at the TRDA other than attending general meetings. I was not on the tender committee. I did not have the authority to sign cheques. I was not involved in approving plans or issuing ‘No Objection’ certificates. No one ever consulted me on these matters. I condemn the actions taken to malign me. Today, I feel that entering politics was a mistake. I am advising the young men of my family not to join politics; let them focus on their respective professions.”
