• Alejandro Betancourt López is from a well off family in Valencia, 100 miles from Caracas, Venezuela.

• His parents were employed in the music and jewellery designing industry, respectively. He was a student at the “Legionaries of Christ” run Instituto Cumbres de Caracas.

• He got his first multimillion dollar contract through a school friend, before the age of 30. Betancourt’s first job was with an energy company engaged in the exploration, production and trade of oil and its derivatives in the United States, Europe, Middle East, South America and Africa.

• He was in charge of business management in Latin America there.

• He then joined Guruceaga Group, a firm involved in the export and import of goods, finance, real estate and farm produce as a manager of new business.

• Furthermore, he worked in the BGB Energy group, which was a joint venture with GESCA GAS ( Venezuela ), on behalf of Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

• Betancourt started Derwick Associates Corp in the energy field in 2003, with Pedro Trebbau López. He opened sister companies of the same name in Panama, the USA, Spain and Barbados as well.

• In 2007, he was working as the Latin America representative of Gazprombank.

• During the power fail in Venezuela in 2009 and 2010, Derwick supplied the turbines to thermoelectric power plants trying to alleviate the situation.

• Five of them were provided by Electricidad de Caracas, five by Bariven, a division of Petroleos de Venezuela SA and one by Corporación Venezolana de Guayana.

• Betancourt and his investment partners Francisco Convit and Pedro Trebbau set up Derwick Oil and Gas Corporation in Barbados in 2011.

• In August 2026, resources of the company that he carried on business with in Venezuela have been frozen by the U.S. Treasury Department for Florida oil businessman Harry Sargeant III.

• Sargeant reportedly was a minority shareholder in NABEP, and has been selling off his stake to one run by Betancourt which now has a 100 percent stake in a company pumping about 200,000 b/d.

• On 28 August 2026, President Donald Trump announced a deal to give the U.S. a controlling stake in a joint venture that will have NABEP as its leading private partner, plus long-term contracts for a percentage of Venezuela’s oil reserves.

• In this arrangement, the Office of Strategic Capital (DOD) of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) funds the development of 17 oil fields, which NABEP does.

• The US would get 55 percent of the joint venture’s output and a warrant to buy shares in NABEP or a related company, the State Department said.

• It’s owned by Betancourt’s family, registered in Barbados and is expected to owe up to 5 billion USD to reach 1m bpd in 5 years time.

• NABEP’s lands have been donated to NABEP by Petrozamora; more lands have been purchased over the years.

• Over the years, Betancourt has been investigated for money laundering in Switzerland and Spain and accused of corruption in connection to Derwick’s contracts in Venezuela, but has never been charged in the U.S. and denies any wrongdoing.

• Betancourt is also the descendant of the former president of the Venezuela, Hermógenes López.

• He owns over 2.6 million euros in area overlooking the Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid apartments.
