Some Lesser Known Facts About Siddharth Babu

• Sidharth Babu comes from Kaloor in Kochi, Kerala.

• He completed his BTech in 2012. After graduation, he worked at an e commerce firm for more than two years.

• He later left his job to prepare for the Civil Services Examination. He chose history and political science as his optional subjects.

• He did not clear the exam in his first attempt. In 2017, at the age of 26, Babu cleared the Civil Services Examination and secured All India Rank 15 in his second attempt.

• He opted for the Indian Foreign Service and joined the 2017 batch. He began his career as an officer trainee at the Ministry of External Affairs the same year.

• After joining the service, he took up Mandarin as his compulsory foreign language.

• He trained at the Foreign Service Institute in Delhi, where he learnt international relations, negotiations, conduct of foreign policy and protocol matters.

• From 2018 to 2022, Babu served his first overseas posting at the Indian embassy in Beijing. He picked up the Chinese language during this posting and gained experience in handling bilateral matters related to China.

• He continued his studies of Mandarin along with China’s history, politics and economy through these years, which also covered the period of strict Covid lockdowns in China.

• Over the course of his career, Babu went on to serve as third secretary, second secretary, consul and under secretary, before he became deputy secretary.

• From August 2022 to June 2024, he served as consul in the United States. During this posting, he pursued a master’s degree in language interpretation and translation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California.

• In 2024, Babu returned to New Delhi and was appointed Under Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs.

• From January 2025, he took charge as Deputy Secretary in the East Asia Division of the ministry. This division looks after India’s relations with China, Japan, and South and North Korea.

• Along with his regular diplomatic work, he also steps in from time to time to interpret and translate for the Prime Minister and other senior government officials.

• India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September 2026, under its chairship for the year.

• The theme of the summit was Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.

• On 13 September 2026, at 4.13 pm, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a photograph on X showing him holding hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit.

• Babu appeared as a fourth person in this photograph, standing beside the Prime Minister.

• He was present to translate Xi Jinping’s remarks during the conversation with Modi. The photograph went viral and brought national attention to him.
