Some Lesser Known Facts About Abhay Singh

• At a very young age, Abhay began playing squash at the Indian Squash and Triathlon Academy in Chennai.

• He participated in his first South Asian Games in 2019 in Nepal, where he won a bronze medal in the men’s singles category.

• He competed for the Indian Men’s Squash Team which won a silver medal at the South Asian Games in 2019.

• He made his Challenger Tour debut in May 2022 in Lorient, France, and won the PSA World Tour for the first time.

• In an interview, he said that his performance at the 2022 CWG selection trials, where he played four matches and won all 4 of them, was one of his best performances ever.

• He made his Commonwealth Games debut at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, where he took part in the men’s singles and men’s doubles events.

• He later went on to win 5 titles on the PSA World Tour in 2022; Archi Factory Open Lorient (Challenger 5 level), Tuanku Muhriz Trophy, Alto Group Pennant Hills NSW Squash Open, 4th HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Chennai Leg, and the 4th HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Jodhpur Leg.

• In October 2022, he competed in the 36th National Games in Gujarat, where he bagged gold in the men’s team event as well as the individual event.

• He was a member of the Indian national squash team that won the 21st Asian Squash Team Championship in November 2022, making history as the first Indian squash team to win the title in South Korea.

• With a world ranking of 74 in December 2022, he broke into the top 100 squash players of the world. In January 2022, he was ranked 144.

• He competed in the 78th SRFI HCL National Squash Championship in December 2022, which was held in Chennai and was organised by the Tamil Nadu Squash Rackets Association (TNSRA). He won the Indian National Championship title by defeating S. Velavan in the final match. In an interview, he talked about his experience at the National Championship and said,
  

  Winning the Nationals was a dream for me and winning it in my first final is great. It is certainly my biggest win and very special.”

• He competed in the PSA World Championship, which was held in Chicago, Illinois, in May 2023.

• He played squash for the Indian men’s national team in 2023; the other players on the squad were Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar, and Harinder Pal Sandhu. The team won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

• In his leisure time, he enjoys hanging out with his grandparents, parents, and friends. He has several things on his bucket list, like skydiving and swimming with dolphins.

• He thought about giving up squash in December 2021, but he made the decision to keep playing after being chosen to play for the Indian squad in Birmingham during the Commonwealth Games. He expressed in an interview how thankful he was that he did not allow a specific stage of his life to influence his choice.

• Since he played third on the night of the finals of the 2022 Asian Games, and the team won 30/09 precisely three nights after losing to Pakistan in the group stages, he believes that number three is lucky for him. The Asian Games was his third senior event for India in 2023. The final match started at 3:30 pm.

• He has a pet dog named Thor. Its breed is the Golden Retriever.

• Abhay had to shed about 20 kg of body weight during his teenage years to make himself fit to play squash.

• He prefers to work out twice a day. To keep his flexibility, he does yoga in the afternoon.
