Prakash’s surname ‘Padukone’ was named after his villages name, Padukone, near Kundapura, Udupi district, Karnataka.

He had a keen interest in Badminton since his childhood and also won the National Junior Champion in 1964.

In 1971, Padukone became the youngest player to win the national senior championship at the age of 16.

He won the National Senior championship title consecutively for nine years from the year 1971 to 1979.

His marriage with Ujjala was arranged by his parents and the couple together have two daughters, Deepika Padukone, and Anisha Padukone.

Prakash won the “Evening of Champions” at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1979.

The year 1980 brought tremendous success for Prakash as he went on to become the first Indian to win the men’s singles title at the ‘All England Championship’ after defeating Indonesian shuttler, Liem Swie King, after which he was ranked World No 1. In the same year, he also won Danish and the Swedish Open.

He defeated his idol, Ruby Hartono in the Swedish Open.

Prakash did most of his International career training in Denmark where he befriended many European players such as Morten Frost.

In 1991, Prakash took retirement from competitive sports and served as the chairman of the Badminton Association of India for some time.

From 1993 to 1996, he became the coach of the Indian National Badminton Team.

In 1994, Prakash founded the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) along with Vimal Kumar and Vivek Kumar.

Prakash co-founded Olympic Gold Quest in 2001 along with Geet Sethi, an organization that aims to promote Olympic sports in India.
