Some Lesser Known Facts About Amar Subramanya

In 2001, after completing graduation in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering, Amar worked briefly as a software engineer at IBM, Bangalore.

In 2005, he did an internship at Microsoft, where he worked on machine learning programs.

In 2005, Amar moved to the USA and got admission in the University of Washington, Seattle, to pursue a PhD degree.

In 2007, he received a Microsoft Research Graduate Fellowship, where he co-authored a technical book titled “Graph‑Based Semi‑Supervised Learning”, which is now commonly cited in machine-learning research and curricula.

In 2009, Amar completed a PhD degree in Computer Science, specialising in semi-supervised learning and graphical models, techniques to help train AI systems efficiently when labeled data is limited.

In June 2009, after completing his PhD, Amar Subramanya joined Google as a staff research scientist.

In November 2019, Amar was appointed as the vice president of engineering at Google, where he led Engineering for Gemini, Google’s flagship multimodal generative AI assistant, scaling to models of over a trillion parameters and integrating NLP, vision, and speech. He has served in that role till June 2025.

Amar has served for more than 16 years at Google, where he worked closely with Google DeepMind on various cutting-edge model-training and deployment work for large models.

In July 2025, Amar was appointed as Corporate Vice President at Microsoft.

At Microsoft, Amar Subramanya oversaw foundation models that power Microsoft Copilot and related enterprise AI layers across productivity tools.

He also led Microsoft’s various teams to scale large language models and align these with security and enterprise compliance requirements.

In December 2025, Apple announced Amar as the vice president of AI, where he will succeed John Giannandrea. Amar will remain as an adviser to John Giannandrea until his retirement in spring 2026.

According to Apple, Amar will oversee Apple Foundation Models, the core large models powering Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and services.

Amar Subramanya will also lead research groups in machine learning and applied AI that develop on-device and cloud-based features.
