Some Lesser Known Facts About Anand Pandurangi

• From his early childhood, Anand Pandurangi chose medicine as his profession as it seemed like a logical choice to help the society and the nation.

• Later on, when psychiatry opened up a road for him to move beyond and towards this goal. He graduated from medical college, Hubli, Karnataka.

• After this, he did post graduate honours at Karnataka University, Dharwad.

• He acquired his clinical skills from at Karnataka Institute of Mental Health, Dharwad and refined them more under the psychiatrist Dr B M Debsikdar at Miraj.

• He was attracted to his home town and the surrounding areas and returned to Dharwad.

• He established a small practice in his own house, and treated patients night and day.

• Three decades ago, there was little awareness of mental health issues and the associated stigma.

• Pandurangi began to educate people whenever he could, and gradually new, non judgmental avenues began to be opened to people suffering from mental illnesses.

• His work quickly expanded beyond the walls of the hospital.

• He conducted counselling programs in schools and colleges, mental health camps in towns and villages, and mental health seminars for teachers to gain awareness regarding mental health issues of adolescents.

• Many camps were established in neighboring districts and care was brought right to the doorsteps of those in need most.

• He was often asked to have sessions with students, parents and teachers, and continued this practice throughout the decades at educational institutions.

• He expanded his practice to provide student guidance and counselling, parental counselling, premarital counselling and marital counselling, a special Teens Clinic for adolescents, and de addiction services.

• He was accompanied by his wife, Anupama Pandurangi, who was a psychologist and their son Aditya Pandurangi became a psychiatrist.

• Anand Pandurangi passed away at a private hospital in Dharwad at the early hours of 24th September 2026. He was 74.

• Many people from all walks of life came to pay their last respects at Pandurangi residence at Michigan Compound in Dharwad.

• MP and former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar along with former MLA Chandrakant Bellad, Malikarjun Swami of Murugha Mutt and other dignitaries paid their final tributes in the house.

• The state service was held at the cremation on the night of 24 September 2026. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, former Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, MPs, among others, expressed grief.
