  • Kamte was part of the 1989 batch of the IPS of the Maharashtra cadre. He had initially got selected for the Indian Revenue Services (IRS but chose the IPS over the IRS because of his affinity towards wearing a uniform.
  • Ashok Kamte has joined Indian Police Services in the year 1989.
  • His father, Marutirao Narayanrao Kamte, worked as Lieutenant-Colonel in Indian Army and his grandfather Narayanrao had worked with the Imperial Police.
  • He also represented India at the junior power-lifting championship in Peru in 1978.
  • Kamte came into media limelight after an August 2007 incident in Solapur when he arrested Ravikant Patil, Member of the Legislative Assembly, as he was bursting crackers late night in a party. Further, he got criticised by political critics, but people of Solapur supported him for that case.
  • He was killed in an action against terrorists during the Mumbai attacks, on 26 November 2008 at Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai.
