  • Her husband, G.R. Gopinath, founded Air Deccan, an Indian regional airline which famously offered flight tickets for only 1 rupee. She worked as the chief caterer in Air Deccan.
  • She often hosts classical music concerts with her husband in their bungalow, next to Vijay Mallya‘s home in Bangalore.
  • In 1995, she started ‘Bun World,’ a popular bakery in Bangalore. The bakery is known for its delicacies, including sandwiches, brownies, biscuits and cakes.

  • The bakery is also known for its pocket-friendly meals that attract students and working-class individuals.
  • She was inspired by her uncle, Rangaraju, who used to run a small bakery.
  • Initially, she didn’t want to start a business, but after moving to Bengaluru in 1993 with her children from the small town of Javagal, Karnataka, she gave serious thought to starting a bakery to cover the expenses of the big city.
  • In an interview, she talked about starting her journey in the food industry by working as an intern in her brother-in-law Srinivas’ bakery V B Bakery, and said,

    I was good at making idli and dosa. I had also mastered some of the other South Indian dishes. I first wanted to start a small restaurant. It was at this time that Srinivas, owner of V B Bakery, whose family Capt Gopinath’s sister is married into, pitched in to help. It was a new line, but I grabbed the opportunity.”

  • She enrolled herself in a 6-month baking course at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Hebbal, Bangalore, while working at the V B Bakery and its subsidiary company, Butter Sponge in Basavanagudi, Bangalore.
  • Later, she got a trade license and started a bakery in a small space in Malleshwaram, Bengaluru.
  • As per her, she was inspired by her mother to manage the finances very intelligently.
  • On 12 November 2020, the Tamil film ‘Soorarai Pottru’ was released. It was based primarily on her husband’s life. She was portrayed by the actress Aparna Balamurali, who won the National Award for her role.
