  • In October 2025, Biplab Goswami came into the limelight when it was claimed that the story of the 2023 film Laapataa Ladies had a resemblance to a French-Arabic short film titled ‘Burqa City.’
  • After that, in a media interview, he clarified the plagiarism controversy about the film.​ He said that it was upsetting and frustrating for him as the writer, since the film has been loved by audiences and critics worldwide.​

    I watched Burqa City on a social platform just today to see for myself the plagiarism claims. Apart from minute elements, where is the similarity between his short film and our feature film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ !? ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is an entirely different story with an entirely different cinematic treatment.”

  • Biplab Goswami said that no one from the media or other teams asked him or his team for comments before spreading false and unnecessary accusations.​
