  • Cody Johnson belongs to a musically inclined family and learned to play various musical instruments from his father at a young age.

  • He initially performed at his church and with amateur music bands in his school.
  • At 14, he began bull riding and was trained by a vocational agricultural (vo-ag) instructor, Mr Larry Fortenbury, who later became one of his life mentors. His career goal then was to participate in the National Finals Rodeo (a rodeo competition by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association or PRCA).
  • After hearing him sing, his English teacher encouraged him to pursue music as his career.
  • He worked as a chain gang overseer at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville, where his father worked.
  • In 2006, he formed a music band, Cody Johnson Band (CJB), with his father as one of the team members.
  • Though his wife saw him first at a Future Farmers of America (FFA) event when she was 14 and he was 17, they started dating four years later when they met at a bar, Shenanigans and Confetti’s Club, where he used to perform.
  • In 2009, he released the album Six Strings One Dream, and three of its singles were popular and reached the top 10 of the Texas music charts.

  • In 2011, after the release of his popular album, A Different Day, he quit his job at the prison facility and became a full-time musician. His wife Brandi and the prison warden played a major role in encouraging his musical career.
