Controversies Two Rape Cases: In 2002, two women devotees accused Gurmeet Ram Rahim of rape and testified against him. One of the complainants was a girl who grew up at the Dera. Her parents taught in the Dera's school. The other victim, a minor girl from Kurukshetra, wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, alleging that Ram Rahim sexually exploited his woman disciples at the Dera. This letter became the basis of an FIR by CBI. [16]India Today Thereafter, the Punjab and Haryana High Court sought a report from the District and Sessions Judge of Sirsa with instructions to probe the allegations made in the letter. A major event in the case occurred in 2014 when Ram Rahim tried to prove that he was impotent since 1990. These claims were rejected by the special CBI court. On 25 August 2017, a special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana declared Ram Rahim guilty of two counts of rape. On 28 August 2017, the CBI court sentenced him to prison for 20 years, 10 years for each of the two rape convictions. [17]The Times of India In August 2024, he was given a parole of 21 days by the court of law. He was allowed to exit jail on the morning of 13 August 2024. [18]Hindustan Times

Murder of Journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati: Ram Chander Chhatrapati was the first journalist who published the anonymous letter that levelled rape charges against Ram Rahim in his local Hindi-language evening daily Poora Sach. On the night of 24 October 2002, two men rode a motorcycle to Chhatrapati residence and shot him at point-blank range. Chhatrapati died four weeks later. On 11 January 2019, Ram Rahim was convicted for his role in the murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment by Special CBI Court on 17 January 2019.

Murder of Dera Manager Ranjit Singh: Former Dera Manager Ranjit Singh was shot dead in the fields outside his village in Kurukshetra district in 2002. He was the brother of the anonymous woman who wrote a letter to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, accusing Ram Rahim of raping her. On 18 October 2021, 19 years after the murder, the special CBI court in Panchkula gave life imprisonment to Ram Rahim and four others in the case. Others accused in the case were Avtar Singh, Krishan Lal, Jasbir Singh, and Sabdil Singh. One of the accused, Inder Sain, died during the trial in 2020. [19]The Times of India On 28 May 2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted him and four others in the murder case of Ranjit Singh. [20]Hindustan Times

Hurting the Religious Sentiments of the Sikhs: In May 2007, Ram Rahim made headlines for hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikhs by dressing up in an attire having a similar appearance to Guru Gobind Singh at a congregation in Salabatpura, Bathinda. He also wore turban with a kalgi (egret feather) just like Guru Gobind Singh. This led to violent protests and vandalism across India by Sikhs. DSS tendered multiple apologies, regretting confusion over the dress, but a criminal case was filed against him. [21]The Times of India This case dismissed by the Sirsa court in 2009 and the Bathinda court in 2014. On 1 June 2015, he was accused of a case theft of Bir of Guru Granth Sahib. Later, he was named in two other cases of sacrilege in Punjab. The first incident was about putting up derogatory posters on 24 September 2015, and the second case was related to strewing torn pages from Bir Sahib at Bargari on 12 October 2015. On 27 September 2015, the Akal Takht accepted Ram Rahim's apology for the imitating of Guru Gobind Singh and pardoned him. On 16 October, the jatherdars later revoked their decision to pardon him observing widespread resentment and protest among Sikhs regarding the pardon. [22]Hindustan Times

Some Lesser Known Facts About Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

  • He was born to Maghar Singh Sidhu and Naseeb Kaur, after 18 years of marriage. [25]India Today
  • His origins were not humble. His father, Maghar Singh, was a landlord in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district.
  • Although he was born into a Sikh family, he wasn’t inclined towards any particular religious faith.
  • Ram Rahim was a kid when Maghar Singh started going to Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS), a religious cult founded by Baba Balochistani Beparwah Mastana ji in 1948. The dera attracted devotees from backward classes and Dalit communities. Maghar Singh was a follower of Shah Satnam Singh, who served as the Dera head until 1990.

  • In 1990, Shah Satnam announced that he wanted to step down and pass on his leadership role to a chosen successor. There were three contenders and Gurmeet was not in the race. • On 23 September 1990, at the age of 23, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh became the third Chief of the DSS.
  • Right away, Singh’s followers at the dera started saying he was the rebirth of Baba Balochistani. Before he died in 1960, Balochistani had made a prophecy that he would be reborn after seven years. The fact that Gurmeet Singh was born in 1967, seven years after Balochistani’s death, helped him take the position of the Dera chief.
  • When Ram Rahim was just a Dera worker, one of his friends named Gurjant Singh was jailed after he took revenge for his uncle’s murder. In jail, Gurjant was influenced by separatist Khalistani militants. After coming out of jail, Gurjant became a Khalistani terrorist and quickly rose in the ranks. Many in Sirsa believe that Gurjant was involved in the process of making Ram Rahim the Dera chief. However, there’s no concrete proof of any violent threats. Gurjant was later killed by security forces in Mohali.
  • After becoming the Dera chief, he became celibate and officially renounced his family. At that time, he already had a son and two daughters. Reportedly, they continued to be with him in his dera quarters.

In 1999, Ram Rahim arranged her marriage to Vishwas Gupta, a follower of the Dera. Later, Honeypreet accused her in-laws of demanding a dowry to invest in Vishwas’s business. On the other hand, Vishwas claimed that Ram Rahim had an illegitimate relationship with Honeypreet. In 2011, Vishwas reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek the custody of his wife from Ram Rahim.
