Some Lesser Known Facts About Hugh Weibgen
- Hugh Weibgen began playing cricket with the Valley’s team when he was in the under-8 group. He moved up through the ranks, playing for both the junior and senior teams, until he made it to the Men’s 1st Grade team. Throughout this time, Hugh also played in Queensland’s cricket system and got a small contract with the QLD Bulls.
- On 22 January 2024, Weibgen stood unbeaten on 39 off 43 in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2024 against Namibia.
- On 31 January 2024, he scored well against England during the Super Six matches of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024. Weibgen scored an impressive hundred runs helping Australia get off to a good start in the Super Six stage.
- On 8 February 2024, the Australian team won by just one wicket against Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup 2024’s second semifinal. They managed to get the 180 runs they needed to win right at the end of the game after Pakistan had made 179 runs. After winning the semi-final, in an interview, he said,
Never in doubt, had full faith in Vids and Raf to get the job done (laughs). Lot of emotions in the dressing room. Tough to leave out Anderson, but Tom Straker bowled unbelievably today. We felt like we were well prepared coming into this fixture. We fought so hard. Everytime we thought we were on top, we lost a wicket. 17-year-old Peake, such composure and maturity in the middle. India are a class team. We’ll love that challenge.”
