He was a versatile player and played in many different positions, like midfielder, defensive midfielder, defender, and striker. He captained the Indian national football team. In the 1993-1994 season, when he joined Mohun Bagan, a famous club in Kolkata, he played amazingly well and became popular among football fans across the country. Just like his fellow Keralite I. M. Vijayan, Jo Paul was selected to play for the Indian national football team after consistently performing well in the domestic league.
