Some Lesser Known Facts About Kris Gopalakrishnan

  • Kris Gopalakrishnan grew up in a middle-class family in Thiruvananthapuram (then called Trivandrum).
  • Both his paternal and maternal grandparents were teachers.
  • His father initially began working as a clerk after passing his school. However, he soon realised that he was not meant to be a clerk, so he gave up his job and started a small plumbing business, that he ran all his life.
  • Gopalakrishnan was inclined towards Science at a young age and decided to pursue the subject in higher studies.
  • Although his parents never interfered in his choices, they asked Gopalakrishnan to study Medicine.
  • Kris tried his level best to clear the medical entrance examination but fell short of 2 marks to bag a medical seat. While talking about it in an interview, Kris said,

    It devastated my family. It devastated me. After that incident, my parents never, ever influenced me in anything I ever did.”

  • As he had not applied to an engineering college, Kris opted for a B.Sc. in Physics.
  • Kris was not so good at Maths and joined C.C. Phillips tuition classes to learn Maths. His teacher C.C. Phillips not only helped him fix his Maths but also helped him regain confidence.
  • He stood fifth in BSc at the University level.
  • Kris then wrote the entrance test for the Indian Institute of Management. Although he cleared the written test, he could not go through the interview as he could not express himself in English at all. The experience taught him how important communication was.
  • He then enrolled himself for a master’s degree in physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
  • After pursuing his post-graduation in Computer Science, Kris Gopalakrishnan began working as a Software Engineer at Patni Computer Systems in Mumbai.
  • After gaining experience at Patni Computer Systems for over two years, Kris, along with N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh, and N. S. Raghavan, founded Infosys, a global leader in consulting, technology, and outsourcing services, in 1981 with an initial capital of with an initial capital of $250.
  • He then moved to the United States for some time to learn how business worked and how to implement enterprise solutions.
  • In July 2007, Kris was appointed as the CEO and Managing Director of Infosys. He held the position till August 2011.

  • Under his leadership, Infosys expanded globally, becoming a key figure in the IT sector and reaching important milestones. Gopalakrishnan played a crucial role in shaping the company’s strategic vision and driving innovation and research initiatives.
  • After retiring from Infosys, Kris Gopalakrishnan founded Axilor Ventures, an accelerator that helps start-ups during the early stages of their business journey. He has been serving as the Chairman of the company since its incorporation.
  • Kris was elected as the President of India’s apex industry chamber Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2013–14.
