Some Lesser Known Facts About Liu Huan

• Liu Huan was born into a family of teachers in Tianjin.

• In school, he once performed crosstalk with his schoolmate Dai Zhicheng, who later became a celebrated crosstalk comedian.

• His mother discouraged a career in comedy, and he chose a different path.

• Liu never received systematic training in music and taught himself. He took part in a French songwriting competition, won first prize, and received sponsorship from the French government for a tour to Paris.

• In 1985, he also won two first prizes in the first university English and French singing contests held in Beijing. Liu graduated in 1985, and the university kept him on as a faculty member.

• He became a professional singer the same year. From 1985 to 1986, he lived in Shizuishan, a remote area in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and volunteered as a music teacher for one year to help promote local education.

• In 1986, he first showed his talent on a China Central Television show. In 1987, Liu recorded his first television drama theme song, Sun in Heart, for the series Snowing City.

• In 1988, he married Lu Lu that year. She worked as a host, director and producer at Hunan TV, and the two married nine days after they met.

• In 1990, Liu performed the official theme song Asian Mighty Winds, with Wei Wei at the Asian Games in Beijing.

• He won many national awards and was named among the Top 10 Film and TV Singers in the Country in 1988, 1990 and 1992.

• Their daughter was born in September 1991. That year the University of International Business and Economics appointed Liu a professor to teach the history of Western music, and he worked there for three decades.

• He had also taught at the University of International Relations. Every year, colleges and universities in Beijing invited him to teach music courses and give lectures.

• Liu did not want to give up teaching, which he considered a stable career. In class, he introduced foreign words when he named people, schools and locations, using English, French, German and Italian.

• On 19 March 2004, Liu held his first concert at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. Na Ying, Sun Nan, Sha Baoliang and Warren Mok sang along with him.

• His song Lulu came out that year. On 8 August 2008, Liu performed the official theme song You and Me with British soprano Sarah Brightman at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

• A member of the Beijing Olympic Games Organising Committee said the committee chose Liu because of his deep and resonant baritone, his strong high notes, his blend of Chinese and Western singing styles, and his positive public image.

• Liu also featured in the 2008 Beijing Olympics song Beijing Welcomes You.

• In the middle of April 2010, Liu underwent a successful hip replacement surgery at the Beijing University Third Hospital.

• In 2012, Liu joined The Voice of China, a singing talent show on Zhejiang Satellite TV, as one of four judges, along with Na Ying, Yang Kun and Harlem Yu.

• He returned in 2017 as a new coach on Sing! China, a rebrand of The Voice of China, and emerged as the winning mentor.

• His finalist, Tashi Phuntsok, won the season. During his daughter’s secondary school years in the United States, Liu declined many job offers and went along with her.

• On 26 December 2018, Liu founded The Liu Huan Foundation of Original Music, in collaboration with Mango TV and Mango V.

• The foundation would spend CN¥ 1,000,000, about US$150,000, every 11 January to sponsor a singer.

• Liu won the season with 62.22% of the votes cast, the highest score at that time. On 3 April 2020, reports confirmed that doctors had diagnosed Liu with avascular necrosis.

• Liu died in Shanghai on 25 September 2026, at the age of 63, due to illness. The University of International Business and Economics issued an obituary and did not disclose details about the illness.
