  • On the early morning of 11 February 2022, at approximately 1:30 am, the police received a report about a burning car near a tree on the central reservation of the A46 in Six Hills, Leicestershire. The caller couldn’t ascertain the car’s make or if anyone was inside. The Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service was summoned to the scene, where they tragically discovered two bodies. The deceased were later identified as Saqib Hussain, a passenger, and his cousin, Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, who was driving the vehicle.

  • As the police delved into the investigation, it became evident that the fatal collision was not a mere accident. The crucial link emerged when it was revealed that Hussain had made a harrowing 999 call just before the crash, frantically informing the operator about being pursued by two vehicles with individuals wearing balaclavas (face masks) attempting to block and ram them off the road, and intending to harm them. The call abruptly ended with the car crash.
  • Subsequently, a murder investigation was launched, leading to the discovery of Hussain’s extramarital affair with Ansreen Bukhari, the mother of Mahek Bukhari, and Mahek knew about their affair. Further inquiries uncovered that Ansreen Bukhari, who was married, had decided to end the affair, which Hussain couldn’t accept, leading to alleged threats of exposing their relationship and sharing explicit content involving Ansreen. • During the trial, Ansreen disclosed having threatened to report Hussain to the police before confiding in Mahek about the messages, and investigations revealed messages in which Mahek expressed intentions to have Hussain physically assaulted. In one of the messages, she had written,

I’ll get him jumped by guys and he won’t know what day it is”.

  • During the investigation, it was discovered that Ansreen had offered to reimburse Hussain £3000, the amount he had spent on her over time. They arranged to meet at the Tesco car park in Hamilton, Leicester, for the money exchange. Unbeknownst to Hussain, several other individuals, including defendants Raees Jamal, Rekan Karwan, Sanaf Gulamustafa, Ameer Jamal, and Natasha Akhtar, were also present at the meeting.
  • These defendants arrived at the car park in two vehicles, an Audi TT and a Seat Leon, during the early hours of 11 February 2022. CCTV footage captured Hussain and Ijazuddin arriving in a Skoda Fabia at around 1:17 am, but they drove away after apparently spotting the other cars and people. The Seat Leon and Audi TT left the car park two minutes later, coinciding with Hussain’s distress call to 999, revealing the dangerous situation he was facing.

  • A forensic collision investigator determined that the Skoda Fabia had collided with a tree after hitting the central reservation barrier, leading to both Hussain and Ijazuddin’s immediate demise due to multiple injuries, before the subsequent fire. The police investigation revealed that the Audi TT, a hire car, had reached speeds of up to 100mph during the chase, while the Skoda’s estimated speed at the time of the collision was over 80mph.

  • The Audi TT’s tracker also indicated heavy braking, reducing its speed to 62mph after the crash. Both cars drove back past the collision site, and the Skoda caught fire. Surprisingly, none of the defendants called for help, and the CCTV footage showed them walking in the Gipsy Lane area of Leicester during the early hours as they made their way home.

  • On 11 February 2022, hours after the collision, the defendants were arrested on suspicion of the murders of Hussain and Ijazuddin. Body-worn footage during the arrests revealed Ansreen and Mahek Bukhari lying to the police about their whereabouts that evening. At their home address, Mahek told officers they had been in Nottingham.

  • Following the seizure of the Seat Leon and Audi TT, a forensic collision investigator found damage to the front of the Seat Leon, indicating a collision with the rear of the Skoda Fabia. Additionally, a wheel brace in the Audi TT’s boot and a curved metal tool in the Seat Leon’s driver’s seat, believed to have been taken deliberately to the meeting, were discovered.

  • All defendants faced two murder charges, denying responsibility during the trial held at Leicester Crown Court; however, they admitted being present in the Seat Leon or Audi TT at the time of the collision, with Raees Jamal acknowledging being the Seat Leon’s driver during the collision with the Skoda.

Saqib was a much-loved young man. He was kind, compassionate, caring and sensible. My family has been shattered by this senseless act and we are still struggling to come to terms with the enormity of our loss. We are grateful that the courts saw through all the lies attributed to my son Saqib. Thank God the jury saw through it and gave the verdicts our children deserve.” [16]Leicester Mercury
