- Born in Alwar, Rajasthan, Mahipal Yadav joined the Indian Police Service in 1997 and was allotted the Kerala cadre.
- He began his service in Kerala and later went on central deputation, serving with the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
- During his stint at the CBI, Yadav headed the investigation into the VVIP AgustaWestland helicopter bribery scam.
- He also handled the inquiry into the disproportionate assets case related to former Samajwadi Party leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
- In 2018, Mahipal Yadav served as the Inspector General of BSF Punjab Frontier based in Jalandhar. He returned to his parent cadre in Kerala in 2023 after completing his central deputation tenure.
- On return, he was appointed Kerala’s Excise Commissioner, where he served until his health issues worsened in 2025.
