- Manoj Sonkar is an Indian politician who became famous after winning the Chandigarh Mayor elections in 2024. He has served as the Vice President of Chandigarh SC Morcha of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
- His family moved to Chandigarh from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh a few months before his birth. When Manoj’s father died when he was 15-16 years old, he dropped out of school to support his family. He later became a politician.
- He rose to prominence when he became the Vice President of Chandigarh SC Morcha of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in 2021. He became Municipal Councillor of Ward Number 7 of Chandigarh in 2021.
- Soman Sonkar, his brother, was issued a show-cause notice in September 2022 for running a liquor vend from two merged flats (1800 and 1881) which were allotted to him by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB). There were rumours that Manoj was involved in the liquor business, which he denied when asked by the reporters. He said that his brother runs the business alone, and he was not a part of it. - In 2024, he defeated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Kuldeep Singh Teeta, who was also supported by the Indian National Congress (INC) and became Chandigarh Mayor. 8 votes were declared invalid by presiding officer, Anil Masih, and Sonkar won by securing 16 votes while Teeta managed only 12 votes.
- After becoming the mayor, he said that his priorities were clearing the Dadu Majra garbage dump and the welfare of the city. When asked about the controversy about the mayoral elections, Sonkar said that the opposition was unable to accept their loss, hence they are creating a drama.
