  • Mohammad Mustafa hails from district Panchkula, Haryana.
  • He is a former IPS officer of the 1985 batch in the Punjab cadre.
  • In an interview, Mohammad Mustafa mentioned that in his early posting, he had served in all the border districts of Punjab.
  • When he was posted as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Patiala, he got married to Razia Sultana.
  • In February 2019, when he was serving as the head of the anti-drug Special Task Force, he asked the Punjab government to relieve him from his post because he felt a junior officer had been appointed as the DGP ahead of him.
  • In response to this, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in May 2019 said that Mustafa had “inadequate” experience in “core policing areas” in the last 10 years, and that was why his name was left out of the panel for Punjab’s top police post.

  • On 16 October 2025, Mohammad Mustafa’s son was found dead in his residence in Sector 4, MDC Panchkula. During the initial investigation, the police reported that when Aqil was discovered conscious at home, he was immediately rushed to Civil Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula. Unfortunately, the doctor declared him dead upon arrival.

  • Initially, police found no foul play in Aqil Akhtar’s death, and after the post-mortem, the police handed over the body to his family.
  • On 17 October 2025, the case took a shocking turn when Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla in Punjab, filed a complaint against Mohammad and his family. He alleged that Mohammad, his wife, their daughter, and his daughter-in-law (Aqil Akhtar’s wife) were involved in his death and had poisoned him. Shamshudeen also presented social media videos shared by Aqil Akhtar in August 2025 as evidence to support his claims.

  • Soon after Chaudhary’s complaint, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to look at the allegations.
  • Meanwhile, Mustafa dismissed the allegations and called them “baseless”, claiming that his son was mentally unstable and a drug addict. He said,

He had been admitted to rehabilitation centres multiple times. The video was made when he was not in a sound mental state.”
