His father worked for Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (Bhel) in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

During his second year at IIT, Kanpur, Mukesh Bansal spent a lot of time in the library, reading books about entrepreneurship.

While he was in the third year of his college, he decided to pursue an MBA and become an entrepreneur.

After graduating in 1997, he worked as a systems analyst at Deloitte in Chicago for two years.

In 1999, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after getting inspired by the dotcom boom.

Mukesh Bansal then started a job portal venture with a friend but later gave it up.

From 1999 to 2006, he worked with various early-stage companies such as eWanted, Centrata, NexTag, and newScale as an engineer and product manager.

His experience in Silicon Valley led him to launch Myntra in 2007 with Ashutosh Lawania and Vineet Saxena. Initially, Myntra was started for selling personalised gift items such as T-shirts, mugs, pens, and caps.

In 2011, the business model of Myntra was changed and relaunched with a focus on fashion. Later, it became a major player in fashion e-commerce.

Once, during a media interview, Mukesh Bansal shared that the work culture at Myntra was influenced by his work experience with different startups.

In 2014, Flipkart acquired Myntra for $330 million, marking the largest e-commerce-related acquisition in India.

Mukesh Bansal continued as the chairman of Myntra and managed the commerce and advertising platform until 2016.

In January 2016, he joined Flipkart as Head of Commerce and Advertising Business, where he updated the talent ideology and led the company to achieve a revenue of $5 billion in a year.

In February 2016, Mukesh Bansal exited Flipkart and Myntra, but he continued to be an independent advisor to both entities.

In 2016, he co-founded Cult.Fit, a fitness and well-being start-up, with Ankit Nagori in Bangalore.
