  • In 1981, Nityanand Rai joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
  • He had an interest in social work since his student years. He started his social work in 1982 as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
  • He held the positions of District Head and Departmental Head of ABVP.
  • Nityanand Rai also worked as a volunteer Tehsildar in the RSS branch of Bihar.
  • He joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in 1990 and started working at the Panchayat level.
  • While serving as the State General Secretary of Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha in Bihar, Nityanand Rai took on the role of president of Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha in 1998.

  • During his college days, when he was a student leader, he allowed economically weaker students to use book banks for free. He also arranged free coaching classes for them.
  • In 2000, he was elected as an MLA for the Bihar Assembly from the Hajipur Assembly constituency. Later, he held various posts, including State Secretary, General Secretary, and President of the Bihar unit of the BJP.
  • Nityanand Rai contested the 2014 general election on the ticket of the BJP and won. He became a Member of Parliament from the Ujiarpur constituency.
  • On 30 November 2016, he was appointed as the state President of the Bihar Bharatiya Janta Party.
  • In the 2016 Bihar Vidhan Sabha election, the BJP promoted Nityanand Rai as the face of the Yadav community to attract Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) voters.
  • During the 2019 Lok Sabha election, BJP and its allies won 39 out of 40 seats under his leadership. Rai won the MP seat by a margin of more than 3.75 lakh votes for the second time.
  • On 23 May 2019, Nityanand Rai became the Minister of State for Home Affairs.
  • After the 2019 election, he became the State Home Minister in the NDA2 Council of Ministers.
