On 26 December 2016, he was jailed for one year under the section of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. He was convicted of mishandling funds during his tenure as State Animal Husbandry Minister, related to misappropriating funds in the procurement of cows. He completed the one-year sentence on 10 August 2018.

  • Prem Singh Tamang started working as a government teacher in Sikkim in 1990 after completing his graduation.
  • Three years after working as a teacher, he resigned from his job and started working as a social worker.
  • He later joined Pawan Chamling‘s party SDF and became MLA for the first time in 1994.
  • He later served as State Youth Convenor and Vice-President of SDF.
  • After serving as minister of various departments for Sikkim between 1994 and 2013, he formed his political party Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).
  • His fight with Chamling started due to the Rolu Picnic event conducted by Sikkim government employees on 21 December 2009 as the SDF government sent show-cause notices to the employees.
  • In 2019, he became the 6th Chief Minister of Sikkim after defeating Pawan Chamling who served as Sikkim CM for 25 years.
