- Prem Singh Tamang started working as a government teacher in Sikkim in 1990 after completing his graduation.
- Three years after working as a teacher, he resigned from his job and started working as a social worker.
- He later joined Pawan Chamling‘s party SDF and became MLA for the first time in 1994.
- He later served as State Youth Convenor and Vice-President of SDF.
- After serving as minister of various departments for Sikkim between 1994 and 2013, he formed his political party Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).
