Some Lesser Known Facts About Vikramjit Singh
- Vikramjit Singh is a professional Dutch cricket player. He has been a part of the Netherlands national cricket team since 2019, and he plays as a left-handed opening batsman.
- Singh’s grandfather, Khushi Cheema, escaped to the Netherlands after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Initially, Khushi worked as a taxi driver but later established his own transport company in Amstelveen. Over the next few decades, the family moved back and forth between the Netherlands and India before finally settling in the Netherlands when Vikramjit Singh was seven years old.
- In the Netherlands, Vikramjit Singh’s family experienced numerous challenges and encountered racial discrimination. During that time, racism was prevalent, and they faced difficulties due to their skin colour, turban, and beard. However, over time, things began to improve. Khushi Cheema passed on his transportation company to his son Harpreet before returning to India in 2000. In 2016, in a media conversation, Vikramjit Singh revealed that his father was Dutch, and his mother was Indian. He said,
My father is Dutch and my mother is from India, and we moved to the Netherlands when I was very young. Obviously my dad is Dutch and my grandparents were the ones who had moved to the Netherlands, so I had to be with my dad (laughs).”
- When Singh was eleven years old, he caught the attention of Netherlands captain Peter Borren, who encouraged him to join the VRA Amsterdam cricket club. Soon, he began cricket training under Borren and Amit Uniyal at Uniyal’s academy in Chandigarh for several years.
- At the age of 15, Vikramjit Singh made his debut for the Netherlands A cricket team. Singh also represented the Netherlands national under-19 cricket team at the 2019 Under-19 World Cup Europe Qualifier.
