Controversy2001 defamation case

In 2001, Vinai Kumar Saxena, who at the time was the president of an NGO, the National Council for Civil Liberties, filed a defamation case against Medha Patkar who called him a 'coward' in a press conference and said he was not a 'patriot' when his NGO published an advertisement against Patkar's Narmada Bachao Andolan. On 1 July 2024, after 23 years of filing the case, the Saket Court in Delhi sentenced Patkar for five months in prison. The court also ordered her to pay Rs. 10 lakh compensation to Mr. Saxena.   • Vinai Kumar Saxena grew up in an educated and reputed family in Banda, Uttar Pradesh.
  • In 1975, while he was studying at Mardhan Singh Inter College in Talbehat, Lalitpur, Vinai founded a student union and served as its general secretary.
  • He holds a pilot license.
  • Vinai began his career as an Assistant Officer at J.K. Group of companies in Rajasthan in 1983. He worked at the company’s White Cement plant in different capacities for 11 years and was promoted to the position of General Manager in 1995.
  • As the General Manager of the JK Group, Vinai looked after the proposed Port Project of the company in Gujarat.
  • Soon, he became the CEO and Director of the Dholera Port Project in Dholera.
  • He was also made the in-charge of the construction of a concrete gravity dam of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) backed by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited.

Is this not a racial bias against India and its role models of historic reverence?”

    Soon, the museum authorities issued an apology and immediately shifted the statue to the World Leaders’ Exhibition hall.

  • In July 2009, Saxena was recognised for his activities related to water security in the Coastal Bhal region of Gujarat. He was invited by UNESCO to attend a Workshop on ‘Wise Coastal Practice for Sustainable Human Development’. The project successfully solved the problem of non-availability of fresh water in the Bhal region.
