Some Lesser Known Facts About Wanindu Hasaranga
- At the age of twelve, he began his journey in cricket. He joined the Under-13 team’s cricket practice sessions, initially specializing as a fast bowler; however, over time, he developed into a talented all-rounder, showing a particular fondness for fielding. In 2014, his reputation started to rise in inter-school cricket when he took 12 catches in a single match.
- Afterwards, he had an encounter with coach Lamkal de Silva, who was greatly impressed by his impressive arm speed. De Silva managed to persuade Hasaranga to transition into a leg spin bowler. Subsequently, Hasaranga actively participated in numerous inter-school tournaments, including the esteemed Red Bull Campus Cricket Tournament in 2017. Encouraged by his experiences and success in cricket, he made the decision to pursue a professional career in the sport.
- On 26 February 2016, Wanindu Hasaranga made his debut in domestic first-class cricket, representing the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club (SLPACC) in a match against Bloomfield. Although he did not manage to take any wickets during the game, he showcased his batting prowess by scoring an impressive 87 runs in the first innings and an additional 6 runs in the second innings.
- He made his debut in domestic one-day cricket on 30 November 2015, representing the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club (SLPACC) in a match against Tamil Union in the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament. Following his initial stint with SLPACC, he went on to play for teams such as Colombo, Dambulla, and Galle in different domestic tournaments.
- Hasaranga’s domestic performances were outstanding, highlighted by his remarkable achievement of taking 10 wickets in a first-class match and an impressive 6-wicket haul for just 24 runs in a one-day fixture. These outstanding displays led to his selection for the Under-19 national team.
