Jay is the grandson of Nanji Kalidas Mehta, the founder of Mehta Group of Industries.

He now runs the ‘Mehta Group of Industries’ and also runs two other companies such as ‘Saurashtra Cement Ltd.’ and ‘Gujarat Sidhee Cement Ltd.’

His first wife Sujata Birla died in 1990 in an Indian Airlines Flight 605 plane crash.
