- He was born in a well-civilized family; as his father was a classical music industry executive, and his mother was a staff editor for New York Times.
- His love for food developed in his youth when he first tried his first oyster on an oyster fisherman’s boat on a vacation in France.
- While pursuing his studies, he worked for seafood restaurants in Provincetown, Massachusetts, which made him more determined to pursue his career in cooking.

- He had a long-time addiction to cocaine and heroin in his college time.
- He then attended The Culinary Institute of America and gained experience of working in some renowned restaurants of New York City like Supper Club, Sullivan’s, and One-Fifth Avenue.
- In 1998, he joined Brasserie Les Halles, a restaurant based in Manhattan, as an executive chef and worked there till the restaurant got bankrupt and closed in 2017.
