He was born in a modest Bengali-Brahmin family.

Mr. Debroy is a noted Indian Economist and has served in different capacities for the Government of India.

He has lent his teaching services at various renowned academic institutions such as Presidency College, Kolkata, Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, etc.

He is also Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore.

He is also working on an unabridged translation of the Bhagavata Purana.

In 2015, Mr. Debroy was awarded Padma Shri by Pranab Mukherjee (the then President of India).

On 25 September 2017, he was appointed the Chief of the newly set-up “Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).” Mr. Debroy will be to Prime Minister Narendra Modi what C Rangarajan was to former prime minister Manmohan Singh.
