Controversies | • Removed as the BCCI President: In January 2017, he was removed as the President of the BCCI by the Supreme Court of India. Supreme Court appointed Lodha Committee stated that Government officials should not be a member of the administrative body of any sports. Anurag Thakur resisted this decision a lot and even refused to agree to the Supreme Court order. The Supreme Court ordered Anurag Thakur to apologize or he would be arrested. Anurag Thakur then issued an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court and stepped down. • Wrestlers protests: On 3 May 2023, Vinesh Phogat, during the wrestlers protests against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, levelled charges against Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur for suppressing the matter and said that it is tough to stand against a powerful person who is misusing his power and position. She said, "We ended our protest after talking to Union Sports Minister (Anurag Thakur), and all the athletes had told him about the sexual harassment. By forming a committee, he tried to suppress the matter there; no action was taken that time." [1]NDTV • Controversial caste remarks In July 2024, Thakur hit the headlines after he, in a speech in the Lok Sabha, said that "Jiski Jaat Ka Pata Nahin, Woh Ganna Ki Baat Karta Hai." Later, on Congress' demand, several segments of his speech were expunged from the official record of the Parliament. However, his remark on caste was not because many sources revealed that since Thakur did not name any person in the speech, it did not qualify to get expunged. When PM Modi shared the link of his complete un-expunged speech on social media, the Indian National Congress (INC) served a privilege motion against the Prime Minister. |
