- Her mother, Marianne McGrath, was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Kentucky’s medical school.
- When she was only 12 years old in 1987, she wrote a letter to the United States Naval Academy to ask when women would be able to fly in combat. An officer from the academy called her mother and said that he did not think that women could ever fly in combat. Thereafter, she wrote to her representatives to the House, Senator, and every member of the Armed Services Committee.
- When she was in High School, she played varsity soccer, basketball, baseball and also captained a soccer team in her school.
- When McGrath was studying in the United States Naval Academy, she also served as the director of the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference. While in the academy, she was also a member of the first women’s varsity soccer team.
- When she was only 21 years old, she was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.
- After completing her flight school, McGrath began her career as a Weapons Systems Officer in the F/A-18 aircraft.
