Political Journey• In Kentucky's 6th congressional district election in 2018, she was the nominee of the Democratic Party, however, she narrowly lost to the incumbent, Andy Barr of Republican.
• On May 22, 2018, McGrath won in a Democratic primary House race in Kentucky defeating  Jim Gray, the mayor of Lexington, Kentucky. She won all 18 counties except Fayette County, Kentucky.

  • Her mother, Marianne McGrath, was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Kentucky’s medical school.
  • When she was only 12 years old in 1987, she wrote a letter to the United States Naval Academy to ask when women would be able to fly in combat. An officer from the academy called her mother and said that he did not think that women could ever fly in combat. Thereafter, she wrote to her representatives to the House, Senator, and every member of the Armed Services Committee.
  • When she was in High School, she played varsity soccer, basketball, baseball and also captained a soccer team in her school.

  • When McGrath was studying in the United States Naval Academy, she also served as the director of the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference. While in the academy, she was also a member of the first women’s varsity soccer team.
  • When she was only 21 years old, she was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.
  • After completing her flight school, McGrath began her career as a Weapons Systems Officer in the F/A-18 aircraft.
  • McGrath and Jaden Kim became the first female aviators to join VMFA-121, a Marine Fighter Attack Squadron.

  • In 2002, she was deployed to Manas, Kyrgyzstan for a six months tour in which she flew 51 combat missions in an F/A-18D in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
  • During 2005 and 2006, she went on to another mission in Afghanistan with Squadron 121. During this period, she became the first female to fly in an F/A-18 in combat for the U.S. Marine Corps.
  • In 2007, she was promoted to Major from Captain and soon after, she was deployed to East Asia. During this time, she was the part of Fighter Attack Squadron 106.

  • During her military career, she flew at least 2000 flight hours and did over 85 combat missions.
  • From 2012 to 2014, McGrath worked at the Pentagon in the Strategy & Plans Division, International Affairs Branch as a Marine Corps liaison to the Department of State and the US Agency for the International Development.
  • On June 1, 2017, she retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after rendering 20 years service.
  • In 2017, McGrath entered politics and launched a campaign announcement video on YouTube which got very popular.
