Some Lesser Known Facts About Salim Ghouse

• Salim Ghouse was a veteran Indian actor, who is well-known for acting in several Hindi, English, and South Indian films and TV serials. The actor, apart from acting, was also a theatre director and a trained martial artist. He died on 22 April 2022, after suffering from a massive cardiac arrest.

• Salim since childhood was interested in acting. After completing his graduation in Chennai, he went to Pune and took admission in the renowned Film and Television Institute of India.

• During his early days, Salim worked with amateur theatre groups and always talked to people from different professions, such as priests and shopkeepers. He did this to know about different facets of life.

• In 1976, Salim made his debut with the film, Manthan: The Churning. In the film, he was given the role of Moola.

• In 1977, he directed plays such as Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, Perambur and Life of Christ, a play that focused upon the Christian festival of the Good Friday. In an interview, Salim told the media,
  

  There were days when I had nothing to eat but a cup of tea and a few biscuits. I’d never felt hungrier, or more alive in my life. I think that’s where my idea of theatre was born.”

• In 1978, he was given the role of a student, in the film, Swarg Narak.

• In 1981, Salim played the character of Desai, in the film, Kalyug.

• In the same year, Salim was given the role of Raghu in the film Chakra.

• In 1982, Salim was offered a role in the film, Meri Kahani.

• In 1982 itself, Salim played the role of a character named Tiger, in the film Partner.

• In 1984, Salim was given the role of a character called E23, in the film Kim. The movie was based upon Rudyard Kipling’s novel. In the same year, he played the role of Gajanan Chitre’s goon in the film Saaransh. In the film, he was a notorious villain, who always roamed around with acid.

• In 1984, he did a TV serial named, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi. In the serial, he played the role of Mr Venkat. In the same year, he played the role of a lawyer, in the film titled, Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho!

• In 1985, he did another film titled, Trikal (Past, Present, Future)

• In 1988, he played the role of Piroo, in the Pierce Brosnan starer film, The Deceivers.

• In 1988, he played the role of Shriniwas Venkateshwaran, in the TV series titled, Wagle Ki Duniya.

• In 1989, Salim landed a role in the film, Suryaa: An Awakening. In the film, he played the role of a character named Ramu Gulzar.

• In the same year, Salim was offered another film called, Mujrim, in which he played the role of an Assassin. He was offered another role, as Zinda, in the film Vetri Vizha.

• In 1988, he was offered different roles in the TV series, Bharat Ek Khoj. In the series, he played the role of Rama, Krishna, Tipu Sultan and Ramaraya.

• In the 1990 film, Trikon; Salim played the role of Guru (Shankar). In the same year, he was seen in the Malayalam film, Thazhvaram as Raju.

• In 1991, he played the role of Sakkarai Gounder, in the Tamil film Chinna Gounder.

• In 1992, he was a part of a TV series called Inkaar. In the same year, he was given a role in the Malayalam film Bombay Police. Later on, he was given a role in the film, Zulm Ki Hukumat. He played the role of Tiger, a police officer.

• In 1992, the actor was given a role in the film, Antham and Drohi. In Drohi, Salim played the role of Inspector Krishna.

• In 1993, he was in the film Akanksha; as Arjun Singh, Rakshana; as Chinna, and Thiruda Thiruda; as a villain named Vikram.

• In 1994, he played the role of Bakhtiar, in the TV series, The Maharaja’s Daughter. He was then offered the film, Seeman, in which he played the role of Masanam.

• In 1996, he was offered another film titled, Sardari Begum; in which he played the role of Manik Sen.

• Salim, in 1997,  worked with Shah Rukh Khan, in the film Koyla. Salim in the film played the role of Brijwa.

• After Koyla, in 1997, Salim was given another role in the film Shapath. In the film, he played the role of Lankeshwar.

• In 1998, Salim played the character of a motel manager in the film, Getting Personal. He was also a part of the film titled, Maharaja, where he depicted the character of Ranvir Singh.

• In 1998, he was offered another film, Soldier, in which he worked with Bobby Deol. In the film, Salim played the role of Jaswant Dalal.

• In 2000 he was spotted in the film, Badal; and in 2001 he was offered different roles in the film, Aks and Indian.

• In 2002, he played the role of Seeni, in the film, Red.

• In 2003, he was in the film Chori Chori, and in 2004 he was given the role of Kasturi’s Father, in the film titled, Dukaan: Pila House.

• In 2005, Salim played the role of Vappa in the film, Daas. In the same year, he was offered 3 more films titled, Chanakya the Warrior, Udayon (as Thevar) and Missed Call (as Arindam Kumar Sengupta).

• In 2009, he was spotted in the film, Well Done Abba, as Janardhan Reddy, and in Vettaikaaran, as Vedanayakam.

• In 2015, he was offered the film Vaalu and in 2018, he was offered a role in the film, Ka: The Forest.

• Salim Ghouse was all set to return to the big screen in the film Kaa.

• Apart from acting, Salim has lent his voice in the dubbing of 2 Hollywood animation films. In 1995, he dubbed the voice for the animated character, Scar, in the film, The Lion King. In 2006, he dubbed the voice of the character, King Leonidas, in the film titled, 300.

• In 2000, he dubbed the Tamil movie, Sudhandhiram.

• Salim Ghouse has also worked in several well-known Hindi TV series such as Subah (1987), X Zone (1998) and Samvidhaan (2014).

• Salim is also well-known for his theatre performances. He has his own theatre troupe, called the phoenix players. He, along with his son Aaryama Salim and wife Anita Salim, acts in the troupe.

• Most of his acts were showcased in the renowned Prithvi Theatres, in Mumbai.

• Salim has performed in several well-known theatre plays, such as DAASTAN-E-DIL and Shakespearewallah, which is an adaptation of the famous novel, Hamlet,  written by Shakespeare. He has also worked with his wife, Anita Salim, in the play titled, A Merchant Of Venice.

• Salim has also designed and directed several famous plays such as The Anthem, Upsidedownside, House of Horrors, Roundabout, Still More Life and Dastangoi.

• Salim is also a red belt, third-degree martial artist. He also taught his son Aaryama, the skills he had learnt from years of practice.

• Salim Ghouse had an excellent memory. He used to memorize and deliver, entire dialogues without taking any re-takes.

• From a very young age, Salim had been questioning the existence of God. He always wanted to find out answers regarding this. In an interview, Salim said,
  

  Everyone, then, wanted to take over my head. But I wanted to find my own answers.”
