Some Lesser Known Facts About B. R. Patil
- B. R. Patil is an Indian politician who was elected as the MLA from Aland in 2023.
- His father, Ramachandrappa, was a freedom fighter who fought against the Razakar Army of the ruling Nizam. Ramachandrappa died when Patil was just two years old after which his mother took care of him and the two siblings with a lot of struggle.
- She worked diligently to care for three separate pieces of farmland that were far away. At the same time, she made sure her sons received education without burdening them with her own hardships.
- His mother was a religious person who didn’t have any formal education but loved reading religious texts like Puranas and other spiritual writings. In the absence of Patil’s father, his mother had a significant impact on his childhood. She showed strength in difficult situations, was devoted to her religious beliefs, taught discipline, was generous and giving, and instilled values and honesty in him.
- Another important influence in his life was Gangabai’s brother and his uncle, Sharannappa Patil from Keshegaon, Maharashtra. He was also a revolutionary who followed Ramachandra’s teachings before India’s independence. After independence, he became a politician. He acted as a father figure in Patil’s life and passed on the leadership qualities he learned from his brother-in-law Ramachandra to his nephew Bhojaraj. In doing so, he became the link between the absent father and the young child.
- During his childhood, he was known for being very active and mischievous. However, he was also observant of the daily struggles faced by the villagers. As he grew older, he transformed into a leader who aimed to make positive changes and solve the problems faced by the villagers.
- One of the first instances of his leadership was during high school when he gathered a group of young people to find and dismantle the bootleggers’ operation that produced harmful liquor affecting the villagers.
- He was the President of the Students Union at SSL College, Gulbarga. When he was in college, he used to participate in peace and solidarity movements. He visited Israel on a study tour. He also participated in the International Youths Festival at Masco. He was part of the Jaya Prakash Movement and underwent imprisonment for 6 months.
- On 25 July 2023, a letter written by him to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah went viral. In the letter, he claimed that ministers were not releasing funds for his constituency. He also accused the district in-charge minister, Priyank Kharge, of not providing funds for the constituency. When questioned by the media, he agreed to have written the letter but later, he stated that the letter was fake. He accused someone of creating the fake letter with the intention of causing a rift between him and Priyank Kharge. In an interview, he said,
The letter purportedly written to the CM is fake. Someone has made the letter viral using my fake letterhead. I have a serial number on my letterhead. This is a copy of the letter head that I had when I was an MLA earlier. It has Shanti Nagar house address. The new letterhead has the address of Akka Mahadevi Colony residence. This letter has been planted to create a rift between me and Minister Priyank Kharge. I will lodge a complaint with the SP in this regard. The BJP might have done this.”
However, several Congress MLAs were said to have signed this letter addressed to the Chief Minister. Basavaraj Rayareddy, the Congress legislator from Yelburga, confirmed that he did sign the letter written by BR Patil.
- In 2023, Patil stated that the Fasal Bima Yojana not only disadvantaged farmers but also exploited and robbed them. He emphasized the need to improve agriculture markets. He further added that farmers who cultivate perishable fruits and vegetables are vulnerable to traders since their produce spoils quickly if not sold immediately. He also criticized insurance companies for charging high premiums but providing meagre payouts when farmers make claims, while the companies themselves enjoy substantial profits.
