Controversies | • Arrested For Protests: In August 1998, Khan was arrested for obstructing traffic during a protest against the unauthorized screenings of his film "Vettu Onnu Thundu Rendu" in Pondicherry. Thereafter, the distributor Chinthamani Murugesan released a press statement, condemning video piracy. Responding to his plea, the owners closed down their theatres temporarily for one day in Pondicherry. In December 1998, Khan his wife, and his children were arrested for sitting on a hunger strike. The protest was to demand the release of some Muslim youngsters from jail. Reportedly, they were released later in the evening. In the same month, a ‘bandh’ was announced by the Tamil Nadu Government and various political parties to protest against the Central Government’s economic policies. Mansoor protested this in a unique way by playing cricket in front of the Governor’s residence. However, he was arrested and sent to jail for it. • Convicted in False Rape Charges: In 1998, Mansoor Ali Khan came under public scrutiny when a woman named Sneha Sharma accused him of raping her. She claimed that he took her to a hotel room in Vadapalani, Chennai in 1996, and raped her by giving her juice with sedatives. Apparently, Sneha had approached Khan after seeing his advertisement for a secretary job. Reportedly, the actor promised to marry her, but after he came to know that she was pregnant, he threatened to kill her. In May 1998, Sneha gave birth to a girl. In 2001, the actor was convicted in the case and sentenced to 7 years in prison. Additionally, the trial court fined 3 lakhs. However, the Madras High Court later overturned his prison term but ordered him to pay 3.25 lakhs to Sneha and 7 lakhs to the child. Khan appealed this decision, but the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal in February 2008. In his petition to the High Court, Khan pointed out that Sneha had claimed that she lost her virginity to Khan in 1996, but Sneha had gotten married in August 1994. He produced a document related to the matrimonial case initiated by Sneha, seeking to reunite with her husband and accused her of providing false information to the court. He further explained that Sneha had approached him for help, and he had given financial assistance to her abiding by the Mohammedan Law. Khan said that she accused him of rape as she feared he would stop helping her. Mansoor proved that the complaint lodged by Sneha was false and contended that Sneha was liable to pay Rs. 50 lakh to him, for filing a false complaint against him, damaging his reputation in the industry, and causing financial loss to him. The Madras High Court awarded him the compensation in 2012. [3]The Times of India • Booked for Displaying a Propaganda Banner: In 2009, the Cantonment Police in Tiruchi filed a case against Mansoor Ali Khan, who was running as an independent candidate for the Tiruchi Parliamentary Constituency. The police said they registered the case because the actor's campaign vehicle had a banner that displayed images of Sri Lankan Tamils who had been killed in their home country. This was seen as a violation of the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act of 1959 and the model code of conduct for elections. The banner was eventually taken down. • Land Grab Charges: In 2012, the Chennai Police arrested Khan for allegedly taking over a piece of land worth 1 crore rupees near Koyambedu. This land originally belonged to a private company employee named V. Duraivelu. Khan was taken into custody from his residence on Nungambakkam High Road. The police claimed that about 16-17 years ago, Khan had encroached upon a 1,247-square-foot piece of land that belonged to Duraivelu. He had also constructed a 16-story building on this land without permission. Duraivelu stated that he had bought the land in 1994 for 2.60 lakh rupees from a man named Ramakrishnan. In 2005, Khan promised to officially purchase the land from Duraivelu for 3.75 lakh rupees and gave him an advance of 75,000 rupees. Initially, Duraivelu refused to accept it, saying the amount was much lower than the market price. However, he eventually agreed after facing threats from a few hooligans. Later, he tried to meet Khan to receive the remaining amount, but Khan's goons reportedly chased him away. Afterwards, Mansoor Ali Khan moved into the bungalow in Nungambakkam, which is situated near the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Board office. [4]NDTV • Arrested For Trying to Meet Cauvery Protesters: In 2018, Mansoor Ali Khan, along with 17 others, was arrested for trying to meet detained protesters at a wedding hall in Pallavaram, Chennai. The protesters, including NTK Seeman, director Vetri Maran and others, had been detained for staging a protest over the Cauvery water-sharing dispute. They were remanded to judicial custody later. [5]Deccan Chronicle • Arrested for Remarks On Chennai-Salem Highway: In June 2018, Khan was arrested by the Salem police in Chennai for making an inflammatory speech about the Salem-Chennai highway project. During the speech, he had allegedly said he would kill eight people if the government went ahead with it. [6]The News Minute He said, "If Salem gets an airport, 8-lane highway etc, people can’t live in Salem. If the 8-lane road comes, then many trees and hills will be destroyed. It will affect the livelihood of the people who live here. Hence, the state and the central government must not implement it. Moreover, if there are protests against the highway, I will definitely participate. If the eight-lane project is implemented, then I will kill eight people and go to jail.” While he was lodged in the central jail in Salem, he observed a day-long fast to protest against the project after a court in Omalur rejected his bail plea. [7]The Hindu • Arrested For Making Derogatory Remarks Against PM & CM: In 2019, V.G.Narayanan of Hindu Makkal Munnani Katchi filed a complaint against Mansoor Ali Khan for his derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and TN Chief Minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami on a Tamil television show. Thereafter, the police arrested him, charging him under sections 153 (B) (a)(b), 505(1)(b) and 505 (1) (c) of the IPC. [8]Deccan Chronicle • Booked For Spreading Rumours About COVID Vaccination: In April 2021, Khan gained widespread attention due to a viral video in which he raised concerns about the ingredients used in the COVID-19 vaccine. He accused the Health Secretary of providing misleading information. These statements were made during a media address outside the SIMS hospital in Vadapalani, where actor Vivekh was receiving treatment. Khan suggested that Vivekh's heart attack was a result of the COVID-19 vaccine he received on 15 April 2023. Following a complaint from a health officer from the Chennai Corporation, the Vadapalani police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Khan. The charges included sections 153 (provocation), 270 (intentional acts likely to spread dangerous disease), and 505 (1)(b) (intent to create public fear) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, provisions of the Epidemics Act and the Disaster Management Act were invoked. The Madras High Court granted anticipatory bail to actor Mansoor Ali Khan. Justice M Dhandapani directed him to pay Rs 2 lakh to the Tamil Nadu health secretary to purchase Covishield as a condition for bail. [9]The Times of India • Sexist Comment on Trisha Krishnan: During a press conference in November 2023, Mansoor expressed his desire to share the screen with actor Trisha Krishnan. He specifically mentioned his regret about not having the opportunity to share a scene with her in the film 'Leo.' Mansoor further regretted not having a "bedroom scene" with her in the film and proudly referenced his roles as a rapist in films. These statements by Mansoor soon garnered widespread criticism. Trisha later responded to Mansoor's remarks through a post on X, calling them sexist, disrespectful, misogynistic, repulsive, and in bad taste. She, moreover, expressed gratitude for not having shared the screen with him and asserted that she would ensure it never happens in her career. The National Commission for Women later expressed concern over the matter and demanded the Director General of Police of Chennai to file a case against Mansoor under relevant sections. [10]Onmanorama A case was later filed against Mansoor at the All Women Police Station in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, by the organisation. [11]Hindustan Times Mansoor issued an apology to Trisha on X on 24 November 2023, which she accepted with the words 'To err is human, to forgive is divine.' However, on 28 November 2023, Mansoor announced his intention to file a defamation case and sue Trisha. He labelled his earlier apology as the "biggest joke." [12]Hindustan Times |
