Some Lesser Known Facts About Arokiaswamy Velumani
- Dr. Arokiaswamy Velumani was born and brought up in a village of Appanaickenpatti Pudur, in Coimbatore district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
- He was a son of a landless farmer who use to rare buffalos and sell milk to earn the living for the family.
- In 1978, against all odds he completed his graduation and became the first graduate from his village.
- In 1979, after completing his graduation, Dr. Arokiaswamy started working at Gemini Capsules as a shift chemist with a meager salary. It was a small pharmaceutical company in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. After 3 years the company shut down.
- Taking a leap of faith, Dr. Arokiaswamyand decided to go to Mumbai in search of new opportunities with just Rs 500 in his pocket and he initially slept at a railway station.
- In Mumbai, he cracked the interview and attained a secured job at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) as a laboratory assistant. He worked there for 14 years completing his Masters and Doctor’s and became a scientist.
- He was later posted to the Radiation Medicine Centre (RMC), at BARC department at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- After so many years of working with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, he decided to leave his job to start his own company, and his wife Sumathi Velumani, decided to join him. They took the biggest risk of their lives and left their jobs on the same day.
- In 1996, he set up his own thyroid testing laboratory Thyrocare along with his wife, where they provided offered affordable thyroid testing services.
- Thyrocare not only helped with Thyroid disorder testing but also helped prevent medical checkups and other diagnostic blood tests. Thyrocare flourished under Dr. Arokiaswamy Velumani and his wife, Sumathi Velumani. They opened more than 1,000 laboratories in Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Middle East.
- Arokiaswamy Velumani is also the founder and director of Nueclear Healthcare Ltd. (NHL). This company is a radiology diagnostics company that provides cancer-related imaging services at half the cost of other providers.
- During the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, Thyrocare provided 200 samples daily and handled over 40,000 tests.
