Some Lesser Known Facts About Vijay Kumar Malhotra

• Vijay Kumar Malhotra grew up a middle-class Punjabi family.

• His father, Dr. Khazan Chand Malhotra, was a well-known Ayurveda doctor, and his mother, Sushila Devi, was active in Arya Samaj organizations.

• He was the eldest of of his six siblings.

• During his school days, he was a bright student, especially in Mathematics.

• Vijay Kumar Malhotra completed his graduation when he was eighteen years old after being promoted twice because of his outstanding performance.

• During the Partition of India in 1947, he helped thousands of people while putting his life at risk. He served as an RSS Pracharak in Jammu and Kashmir when Pakistan captured Jammu and Kashmir.

• During his college days, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Punjab University Camp College Students’ Union.

• Later, he was chosen as the Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union, and then Prime Minister of the Hansraj College Parliament.

• Vijay Kumar Malhotra then became a founding member and Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

• During his Ph.D., he submitted his doctoral research on the noted Hindi poet Sohan Lal Dwivedi.

• In 1951, he was appointed as the Secretary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh Delhi unit.

• Later, he served as the President of the Delhi Jana Sangh and National Secretary of the BJP. During this period, he also worked as an election organizer for different states.

• During the same period, he also worked as President of the Delhi Social Welfare Board.

• In 1953, Vijay Kumar Malhotra participated in a movement which aimed to make Jammu and Kashmir a full part of India.
• During this movement, he was arrested along with Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherji, N. C. Chatterji, and other leaders under the Preventive Detention Act. He was jailed for six months.

• In 1958, he was elected as a member of the Delhi Municipal Corporation from the Patel Nagar constituency in New Delhi.

• During this period, he worked on developing parks, lakes, community centers, markets, and other public places of his constituency. He served in the position till 1967.

• In 1962, Vijay Kumar Malhotra was re-elected from the same Patel Nagar constituency.

• When he was 35 years old, he became the youngest Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Metropolitan Council Delhi. He served in the position from 1967 to 1972.

• In 1972, he was re-elected to the Delhi Metropolitan Council and became the Leader of the Opposition. During this period, he was given an additional responsibility to serve as the Chairman of the Assurances Committee.

• In 1966, Vijay Kumar Malhotra participated in the cow protection movement and got injured in police firing. He was then arrested and kept in jail for 15 days.

• In 1974, he served as a Leader of the Indian team at the Asian Games in Tehran.

• In 1975, during the Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Malhotra was jailed for 19 months in Delhi, Ambala, Chandigarh, and Hisar.

• During this period, Vijay Kumar Malhotra became seriously ill and was admitted to PGI Chandigarh, where he was kept alone in a big hospital ward, which was meant for 100 patients who suffered severe mental stress.

• Throughout his life, he participated in more than 200 protests, which aimed for the welfare of refugees, workers, Scheduled Castes, traders, teachers, government employees, and poor people. He went to jail many times during these protests.

• In 1977, Vijay Kumar Malhotra was elected to the 6th Lok Sabha Assembly from the South Delhi constituency as a Janata Party candidate.

• From 1977 to 1980, he served as a Member of the Public Accounts Committee in the Lok Sabha. During the same period, he was appointed as the President of the Janata Party, Delhi.

• As an Indian observer, he used to attend every Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Olympic Games.

• In 1980, he was selected as the President of the BJP Delhi unit. He served in the position till 1984.

• In 1982, Vijay Kumar Malhotra became the first Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Asian Games.

• He had served as the Chairman of the Governing Body of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Sciences.

• Reportedly, he had played a major role in the growth of archery in India. He helped in finding talented archers from India’s tribal communities. His guidance and support helped India become one of the top-ranked countries in the world in archery.

• He had served as the President of the Archery Association of India, Founder President of the Asian Archery Federation, and Founder President of the Commonwealth Archery Foundation.

• From 1983 to 1990, Vijay Kumar Malhotra served as the National Secretary of the BJP.

• During these years, he worked along with Kedar Nath Sahani and Madan Lal Khurana to keep BJP strong in Delhi.

• In 1989, Vijay Kumar Malhotra was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha from the Delhi Sadar constituency. During this term, he served in many parliamentary committees. He served in the position till 1991.

• From 1993 to 1998, he served as Chairman of the Plan Implementation Monitoring Committee, Delhi, and Chairman of the Moral Education Committee, Delhi.

• In 1994, the BJP nominated him to the Rajya Sabha.

• From 1994 to 1996, he served on various parliamentary committees, such as the Committee on External Affairs, the Committee on Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution, and the Parliamentary Committee that reviewed the dividend paid by Railway Undertakings to the General Revenue.

• In 1997, Vijay Kumar Malhotra was appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. He served in the position till 1999.

• During this period, he also served as a Member of the Business Advisory Committee, a Member of the General Purposes Committee, and Chief Whip of the BJP Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha.

• In 1999, he was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha. It was his third term as a Lok Sabha MP. During these elections, he defeated Manmohan Singh.

• From 1999 to 2004, Vijay Kumar Malhotra served as the Chief Whip and Spokesperson of the BJP Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha.

• From 2002 to 2004, Vijay Kumar Malhotra served as the President of the All India Council of Sports with the rank of a Union Cabinet Minister.

• In 2004, he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from South Delhi. It was his fourth term as a Lok Sabha MP. Out of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, he was the only BJP candidate to win.

• From 2004 to 2006, he served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice.

• In 2006, Vijay Kumar Malhotra was appointed as a Member of the Committee on Urban Development. He served in the position till 2009.

• In 2008, he started working as a Member of the Standing Committee on Urban Development.

• During this period, he also served as a Member of the Committee to inquire into the misconduct of Lok Sabha members and as a Member of the Pay Committee for the Lok Sabha.

• On 26 September 2008, the BJP announced that Vijay Kumar Malhotra would serve as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2008 Delhi Assembly election. He won from the Greater Kailash constituency.

• After the election, he attended the Lok Sabha. However, he resigned as MP, kept his MLA seat, and became the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly.

• He had served as the President of the General Association of National Sports Federations and Senior Vice-President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

• In 2010, he helped in bringing the Commonwealth Games to Delhi and served on its Executive Board.
