  • Tejas Shirse was born in Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Maharashtra.
  • His family were farmers. They had no experience of sport before.
  • Tejas was a very active and playful child as a boy. He was a good student, loved science and hated the long classes.
  • He was introduced to hurdles by a former athlete, now a PT teacher.
  • Tejas picked it up primarily to miss school. At that time, there was no synthetic track in Marathwada.
  • So for about a year and a half, he trained on mud, but the hurdles were wooden that he made himself.
  • From that mud track, he went straight to the U17 Nationals and won gold.
  • These years were tight in money and Tejas began selling sports shoes on Instagram to support his own training and spent the last almost two years without relying on his family.
  • He continued to improve at the state and national level in his junior meets and in 2021, he tasted success in the first round of the Under 20 World Championships in Nairobi.
  • He joined the Reliance Foundation under the tutelage of coach James Hillier from December 2022, a relationship that would be instrumental in the coming years.
  • He also took home the 110m hurdles crown from the National Federation Senior Athletics Championships around that time, topping a meet record.
