- Inderjit Singh Sidhu grew up in a military family.
- In 1961, he joined the Punjab Police and was in service for 35 years.
- He remained committed to protecting people and maintaining law and order during his career.
- He rose through the ranks and became a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police.
- Inderjit Singh Sidhu retired from the Punjab Police in 1996 and started living in Sector-49 Chandigarh, India.
- After that, he did not stop serving society.
- During his morning walks, he noticed that many public places were filled with litter.
- He then decided to clean the streets of Chandigarh himself instead of waiting for others.
- He was disturbed by the littering habits of the people in the city.

He once stated in the media that he complained the civic authorities about the garbage, but not changed. He said,
I had complained to the civic authorities many times, but nothing changed. So I decided to do it myself. There is no shame in cleaning. Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
- He then started cleaning the streets daily with a broom and a cycle cart (rehri).
- He collected the garbage, cleaned blocked drains, and cleared public places early in the morning.
- Initially, many people were surprised to see a former senior police officer doing this work. Many of them called him “crazy.”
- However, Inderjit Singh Sidhu did not stop and kept on cleaning the streets every morning.
- He continued his work no matter what the weather was like or how he felt.
- Inderjit Singh Sidhu believed that no work done for society is small. He often repeated the saying,
Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
He said that he did not care when people called him crazy. He said,
I like a clean place, so I clean. I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.”
He gets inspiration from the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev. He believes that keeping the earth clean is a moral duty. He said,
The air is the Guru, water the father and the earth the mother.”
- Inderjit Singh Sidhu added that no person can be worse than someone who spreads dirt on their own mother, meaning the Earth.
- His son, Amoldeep Singh Sidhu, said in a media talk that his father always disliked littering. He said that Inderjit had been stopping people from throwing waste in public places for many years, even before starting the cleaning campaign.
- According to his son, this was simply his father’s nature. He could never tolerate people throwing garbage in public places.
- He then followed this routine for many years and did not expect money or praise.
- His aim was to encourage people to keep their surroundings clean.
- In 2025, some of his videos while pushing his cart and cleaning the streets every day went viral.
- After that, people started calling Inderjit Singh Sidhu “Broom Warrior” of Chandigarh.
- Indian industrialist Anand Mahindra and many other people praised Sidhu for his efforts.
- Mahindra said in a media talk that Sidhu was not happy when Chandigarh got low rank in the Swachh Survekshan. However, he did not complain and chose to take action. Mahindra said,
Purpose doesn’t retire. Service doesn’t age.”

In 2026, the Government of India honoured Inderjit Singh Sidhu with the Padma Shri.

Reportedly, on the day he received the news, he quietly went out to clean the streets before telling anyone about the honour.
