  • Bhanu Pratap Singh hails from Fatehpur Sikri area of Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
  • His father, Uttam Singh had served in the Indian Army that inspired Bhanu from childhood to became a Police Officer.
  • After completing college, he started preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examinations; however, his journey was not successful initially and he failed in his first two attempts.
  • During the next three UPSC attempts, Singh cleared the examination three times. In two of those attempts, he was selected for other government services, including the Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) and the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS).
  • In 2015, he met his wife, Pooja Singh at a family function in Kolkata. According to some reports, Bhanu was then living in a rented house in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, while preparing for the UPSC examination.
  • After that their friendship developed into a relationship. According to his wife, her family opposed the relationship, so she left Kolkata and moved to Bharatpur to be with Singh. On 16 January 2017, they got married. Pooja said,

Our love story was like the movie 12th Fail. I had faith in my God that my husband would become an IPS officer one day. I am from Kolkata and belong to a Brahmin family, while Bhanu comes from a Jat family in Uttar Pradesh. We belong to different castes. When our families refused to agree to our marriage, I left Kolkata without telling anyone and went to Bharatpur to be with Bhanu. I married Bhanu against my family’s wishes.”

  • After their marriage, Pooja worked as a private school teacher in Bharatpur for around five years. She also supported Singh during his long UPSC preparation.
  • In 2020, Bhanu achieved his UPSC goal in his fifth and final attempt. He secured All India Rank 372 and was allocated with Indian Police Service under the Bihar cadre.
  • On 5 December 2021, Singh formally joined the Indian police Service.
  • During his initially IPS career, Singh underwent training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVP NPA), Hyderabad and served as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Nalanda.
  • In 2024, Bhanu Pratap Singh served as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nalanda. He was later posted as Sub-Divisional Police Officer-I (SDPO-I), Danapur, Patna.

  • The dispute between the couple was mainly concern their daughter, Vibha Singh. Pooja alleged that she was being prevented from meeting or speaking to her daughter.
  • After learning that Bhanu was in Bharatpur, Rajasthan with their daughter, Pooja came to Bharatpur from Bihar to meet her. However, she alleged that she was not allowed to enter the family’s residence. She also went to her sister-in-law’s residence in Vijay Nagar, where she also alleged that she was not allowed inside.

  • Pooja then approached the Mathura Gate police station in Bharatpur and asked for help regarding her daughter and the marital dispute.

  • Police reportedly contact Bhanu Pratap Singh by phone. The matter was initially treated as a family dispute, with further action to be taken according to the legal process.
  • Pooja remained at the police station for several hours.
  • A video of Pooja sitting outside Bhanu’s house also went viral. In the video Pooja also spoke about mental harassment and her difficulty in maintaining contact with her daughter.
