- Annie Raja belongs to an orthodox Christian family. As a kid, Annie Raja aspired to become a nun.
- While pursuing graduation, Annie became a member of the All India Students Federation, the student wing of the Communist Party of India.
- Later, she became a member of the youth wing of the Communist Party of India, known as the All India Youth Federation.
- During her time at the All India Youth Federation, Annie Raja led many marches against the incumbent government, supporting the student causes.
- Later, on the persuasion of the CPI leader and ex-chief minister P K Vasudevan Nair, Annie Raja became more active in politics and also took part in many political activities of the Communist Party of India.
- She has held many positions for the Communist Party of India including Kannur district secretary of the CPI’s women’s wing and member of the CPI state executive committee.
- In 1990, she met Doraisamy Raja while leading a CPI women’s march from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram and married the same year.
