  • Arun Maurya is an Indian criminal and sharpshooter who killed Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed, gangster turned politician brothers, in full media glare in Prayagraj.
  • Allegedly, his grandfather went to Panipat in 1988 in the search of livelihood with his whole family.
  • As per one source, he left his village after his parents passed away 15 years ago and spent some time as a beggar to live; however, as per another source, he spent his childhood in Panipat and often got into fights with other children.

  • It was alleged that his father Deepak Kumar Maurya moved to Kadarvadi, Kasganj, with his whole family, from Panipat, Haryana and worked as a chaat seller to feed the family; however, Arun remained in Panipat with his grandfather and uncle.

  • He got involved in criminal activities while growing up, and he was once burglarizing a train between Ujhani to Soron on the Kasganj Bareilly-Farrukhabad railway section when he shot dead Naveen Chaudhary, a GRP (Government Railway Police) official.
  • According to some media reports, he was arrested in February 2022 by Panipat Police for illegal possession of a gun.
  • When the police questioned him, he revealed that he liked keeping guns and bought the gun for Rs 3000 from a resident of Kadarvadi, Kasganj named Atul.
  • Police arrested Arun and Atul and sent both of them to jail.
  • When he got released from jail on bail, he got into an argument with a person who he assaulted and absconded to Kadarvadi. Reportedly, his hand was fractured when he assaulted the person.
  • He returned to Panipat where he worked at a factory and earned around Rs 10,000 per month.
  • Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed were going for a medical checkup in MLN College, Prayagraj on the night of 15 April 2023, around 10:30 pm, and while the brothers were talking to the media, Arun, with his two accomplices named Lovelesh Tiwari of Banda and Sunny Singh of Hamirpur, fired at Ahmed brothers from close range and killed them on the spot.   • The killer trio used Turkiye-made Jigana and Girsan pistols which cost Rs 6-8 lakhs each and are banned in India.
  • They posed as journalists to come close to the brothers. A mic with an NCR News label, a dummy camera, and a bike was recovered from the spot.
  • When the police apprehended them on the spot, they shouted Surrender and Jai Sri Ram.
  • During the initial interrogations, Arun and his aides revealed that they wanted to become popular by killing the notorious Ahmed brothers and wanted to make a name in the crime world.
  • An autopsy was conducted on the dead bodies of the Ahmed brothers which concluded that Atiq Ahmed was hit by 8 bullets and Ashraf Ahmed was hit by 6 bullets which damaged their critical organs and caused their instant death on the spot.
  • An FIR was registered against them under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met with top police officials at his residence soon after the murders following which he imposed section 144 on Uttar Pradesh and suspended the internet in Prayagraj for three days.
  • He suspended 17 policemen who were escorting the brothers with immediate effect and also set up a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) which was headed by the retired judge of the Allahabad High Court Arvind Kumar Tripathi and included Brijesh Kumar Soni, another retired judge, and Subesh Kumar Singh, an ex-DGP.   • He owns one bigha of land in his ancestral village.
  • His neighbours and Aunt Lakshmi said while talking to the media that he did not talk to anyone and was very reserved, and they were not aware of his whereabouts and actions.

  • Interestingly, the infamous killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal happened in 2005, and that is the same year when Arun Maurya was born. Also, the manner in which the Ahmed brothers were killed reminded people of the curse of Raju’s widow Pooja Pal who had said after her husband’s killing that Atiq and his family would also die in the same fashion as her husband.
