  • Umesh Pal was an Indian lawyer and politician, who was shot and killed in UP in 2023.
  • Umesh Pal was a key witness in the murder case of Raju Pal who was a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate whose’s victory over gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s younger brother Ashraf alias Khalid Azim in the 2004 by-election in UP triggered a political rivalry between them. On 25 January 2005, as Raju was driving home from Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, Allahabad, a car overtook his Qualis car from which a gang of armed men came out and attacked him. Reportedly, Raju was shot 18 times along with two other men named Sandeep Yadav and Devi Lal. Atiq Ahmed was accused of being the mastermind behind his murder.
  • Umesh Pal became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in April 2019 in the presence of minister Satya Pal Singh Baghel; however, he switched to the Samajwadi Party (SP) eight months before the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. He allegedly made an attempt to secure a ticket from the Samajwadi Party to contest the election from the Phaphamau constituency by donating Rs. 20 lacs to the party fund; however, he was denied the ticket. According to some sources, he even gave Rs. 5 crores to a leader of the SP who later directed him to contest the elections from the Koraon constituency, reserved for the Scheduled Castes, instead of Phaphamau following which a forged Dhangar caste certificate was made for Umesh in the name of Krishna Kumar Dhangar. After failing to secure a ticket from the Samajwadi Party, Umesh left SP and rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections.
  • On 28 February 2006, Umesh Pal, who was the key witness in the Raju Pal murder case, was abducted and threatened by the goons of Atiq Ahmed to not testify in court following which Umesh filed an FIR against Atiq and Ashraf at Dhoomanganj Police Station in Allahabad (now Prayagraj).
  • On 24 February 2023, Umesh Pal was shot dead near his home in Dhoomanganj’s Sulem Sarai locality while getting out of the backseat of a Hyundai Creta SUV along with two police bodyguards, allegedly by individuals linked to Atiq Ahmed. As per reports, the attackers threw crude bombs and fired a few rounds of bullets at Umesh Pal and his two gunmen. After Umesh’s murder, his widow, Jaya Pal, lodged an FIR against 27 people, including Atiq Ahmad, his wife Shaista Parveen, his two sons, his brother Khalid Azeem aka Ashraf, and others. They were booked under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Explosive Substances Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act.   • On 27 March 2023, Atiq Ahmed was brought from a Gujarat prison to Prayagraj by the UP Police for the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case hearing. On 28 March 2023, a Special MP/MLA court in Prayagraj found Atiq Ahmed, Saulat Hanif, a lawyer, and Dinesh Pasi guilty of kidnapping. The judgement was given by Judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla under Indian Penal Code section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder). Atiq Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and seven others were acquitted by the court in the case; however, seven others, including Atiq Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, were acquitted in the case.
