One of the most Sensational Murders: Raju Pal, a  Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, entered politics in 2002, threatening the political careers of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf alias Khalid Azim. Ashraf contested the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections from the Allahabad West constituency on a Samajwadi Party ticket in 2004, the same year that Atiq was elected as a Member of Parliament from Phulpur (also known as Phoolpur). Ashraf lost the election to Raju Pal, which further intensified their political differences and eventually escalated into a personal conflict.
Raju Pal
On 25 January 2005, as Raju was driving home from Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, Allahabad, a car overtook his Qualis car. A gang came out of the car and attacked him. Reportedly, Raju was shot dead with around 18 bullets along with two other men named Sandeep Yadav and Devi Lal. Atiq Ahmed was accused of being the mastermind behind his murder.

The Killing of a Key Witness in a Criminal Case: After Raju Pal was murdered, his widow, Pooja Pal (also spelt as Puja Pal), filed an FIR against Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother Ashraf. Reportedly, in 2007, Raju Pal's brother-in-law Umesh Pal, who was the key witness in the case, was abducted and threatened by the goons of Atiq Ahmed not to testify in court.
Umesh Pal
Following this incident, Umesh filed an FIR against Atiq and Ashraf at Dhoomanganj Police Station in Allahabad (now known as Prayagraj). In December 2008, the Raju murder case was transferred to he state’s crime branch. In 2011, Atiq’s brother Ashraf was arrested. On 24 February 2023, Umesh Pal was shot dead near his home in Dhoomanganj's Sulem Saray locality, allegedly by individuals linked to Atiq Ahmed. As per reports, attackers threw crude bombs at Umesh Pal and his two gunners, followed by firing rounds at them. After Umesh's murder, his widow, Jaya Pal, lodged an FIR against 27 people, including Atiq Ahmad, his wife, Shaista Parveen, two sons, brother Khalid Azeem aka Ashraf, and others. They were booked under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Explosive Substances Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act.

The SHUATS Campus Incident: On 14 December 2016, Atiq and his aides allegedly assaulted the employees of the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS). The attack was purportedly in retaliation for taking action against students who had been caught cheating in an examination. Reportedly, a video of Atiq beating the SHUATS' teachers and employees went viral. On 10 February 2017, Atiq was arrested by the Allahabad Superintendent of Police on the Allahabad High Court’s orders. [2]Hindustan Times He was locked up in the Naini Central Prison (or Naini Jail) in Uttar Pradesh [3]ThePrint and was shifted to Deoria jail in April 2017.

Kidnapping and Assaulting a Businessman in Deoria Jail: After being shifted to Deoria jail, Atiq was clouded in another controversy. He was accused of kidnapping and assaulting a Lucknow-based businessman named Mohit Jaiswal. According to reports, Mohit was kidnapped from the Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow by aides of Atiq Ahmed in his SUV and was taken to Deoria jail, Uttar Pradesh, where Atiq Ahmed and his son Umar assaulted him for refusing to pay extortion money. Mohit, in an interview, claimed that Atiq forced him to transfer a property worth Rs. 48 crores to his associates while torturing him in jail. After this case, Atiq was accused by two other businessmen of kidnapping and assaulting them in Deoria jail. Following such accusations, the government ordered the Deoria jail administration on 31 December 2018 to shift Atiq to Bareilly prison. [4]ThePrint In June 2019, Atiq was shifted from Prayagraj Central Jail to the Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad. [5]The Times of India

Life Sentence in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case: On 28 March 2023, a court in Prayagraj found Atiq Ahmed and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case; special MP-MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla held Atiq Ahmad, Saulat Hanif, a lawyer, and Dinesh Pasi guilty in the case under Indian Penal Code section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder). However, seven others, including Atiq Ahmed's brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, were acquitted in the case. Atiq Ahmed was brought from a Gujarat prison to Prayagraj following a 24-hour road journey by the Uttar Pradesh police on 27 March 2023. On 24 February 2023, Umesh Pal was shot dead while he was getting out of the backseat of a Hyundai Creta SUV in Prayagraj; two police bodyguards, accompanying Umesh Pal, were also killed in the shootout.
