  • Asheesh Singh is Municipal Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation. Asheesh and his team cleaned 13 lakh tonnes of garbage in just six months in Indore.
  • He is a 2010-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. In 2016, he was posted as CEO, Zila Panchayat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He has also served as the Additional Municipal Commissioner of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. In May 2018, he was appointed as the municipal commissioner of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC).
  • Reportedly, his father was a school teacher and motivated him to join the civil services to help the people.
  • Reportedly, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was working at a slow pace and only 2 lakh tonnes of garbage was cleared in two years.
  • Earlier, the task of clearing the dumpsite was allocated to private agencies, which charged Rs 475 per cubic metre. When the task was allocated to Singh’s team the whole process of clearing the dumpsite was completed under the budget of  Rs 10 crore. He said,

The machines were rented to us at a cost of Rs 7 lakh per machine per month. We operated the machine for 14-15 hours daily using our own resources, and within six months, 13 lakhs tonnes of garbage was cleared.”

  • When a reporter asked him about his daily routine, he said,

Important municipal services like cleaning and water supply begin early. For effective control over it, you have to be in the field in the morning. During the morning tour, I also monitor other projects like SMART city, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and other construction activities on the field.”

  • They planted the machines to segregate dry waste and wet waste. Polythenes were used in road construction and further use of poly bags was completely banned in Indore, people were encouraged to use khadi bags.
  • They started two schemes to support their project- ‘Bartan Bhandar’ and ‘Jhola Yojna.’ People could rent the utensils for parties or functions (free of cost) from Bartan Bhandar to avoid the use of plastic cups or plates. In the Jhola scheme, people were provided khadi bags; to stop the use of plastic bags.

  • In the 2019’s ranking by Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Indore was declared as the cleanest city in India, for the third time in the row.
