  • She was born and raised in a middle-class family. She is the third child of her parents.
  • In an interview, she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field; however, her grandmother wanted her to join the police force. Ultimately, she followed her dream and joined the civil services.

  • At the age of 25, she became notable early for her work in peace talks with Maoist leaders even before her IPS induction. Sumathi was pregnant at that time.

  • In December 2023, she was appointed as the Inspector General (IG) of Police to head the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) of the Telangana Police, and became the first woman in India to lead this highly sensitive anti-extremism intelligence unit.
  • During her service tenure, she has worked in CID, Cybercrime, and counter-intelligence, including interrogations of suspects from terror groups such as Indian Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and ISIS during major terror cases.
