Some Lesser Known Facts About Devika Sihag
- Devika Sihag hails from the Panchkula district of Haryana.
- Devika has started playing badmintion since a very young age.
- In an interview, Sihag mentioned that when she was 9 years old, her father enrolled her and her younger brother at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula, in badminton training.
- Initially, she didn’t enjoy badminton much because of the pressure of balancing sport with studies. However, after six months, she started winning at the district and state levels. In an interview, she said,
Frankly, I didn’t enjoy it much because there was pressure to study also. But slowly as results came at the state level, I started appreciating playing one of the fastest sports. I love the speed.”
- When Devika was 12, her parents enrolled her in Bengaluru’s Centre for Badminton Excellence (CBE) (formerly known as the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy).
- In an interview, her mother, Sunil Maan, who works as a teacher, persuaded her father to allow Devika to move to Bengaluru for advanced training.
- After moving to Bengaluru, she trained under coaches including Umendra Rana and benefited from practice sessions alongside Olympic medallist P.V Sindhu under coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama.
