ControversiesDomestic Violence Charges

Mayweather was charged with two counts of domestic violence and one count of misdemeanour battery (one person intentionally hits or hurts a member of their household) in 2002. He received a six-month suspended sentence, two days of house arrest, and was ordered to do 48 hours of community service.

Punching two women in a nightclub

On 1 August 2003, Mayweather, Tom Summers, and another man spotted Herneatha McGill and Karra Blackburn at the Ra nightclub in the Luxor, Las Vegas. McGill said that she tried to leave the club when she spotted Mayweather but he punched both of them. She revealed that Mayweather had a problem with her due to her friendship with Josie Harris, Mayweather's girlfriend at that time.

In June 2004, he was found guilty of two counts of battery and was given suspended six-month prison sentences on each count and a $500 fine or 50 hours of community service for each count. He was also ordered to undergo counselling for impulse control.[1]Las Vegas Sun

Kicking a bouncer

On 18 December 2003, William Morris, a part-time bouncer at The Radio Tavern bar in Las Vegas, was knocked down on the ground and a bottle was hit on his head by a man. While he was on the ground, Mayweather kicked him in the head. In December 2004, an arrest warrant was issued against Mayweather for not appearing in the trial. In February 2005, he was given a 90-day suspended jail sentence after pleading no contest in the case. [2]The Sydney Morning Herald

Fake case by ex-girlfriend

On 27 December 2003, his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, complained to the police that Mayweather beat her up outside the SRO Club in Las Vegas. On 28 July 2005, during the court hearing, Harris took a U-turn and said that she was drunk, had taken half-pill of ecstasy, and was dancing in the club with friends when Mayweather came outside the club to give her the money she asked from him.

She went outside and started asking questions about their relationship and breakup and also about the girl whom Mayweather was dating. Mayweather left the scene after which Harris went inside the club where she realized the ruckus she had created. She later said that she filed the case to save herself from any police case. Mayweather was acquitted of any charges after Josie's testimony. [3]Las Vegas Sun

Defamation suit by Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao filed a defamation suit against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December 2009 after a video went viral in which Mayweather was seen accusing Pacquiao of using power pellets to improve his performance. In September 2012, a judge ordered Mayweather to pay Pacquiao $114,000 in legal fees for failing to appear for a court hearing. It was later reported that both parties had reached an out-of-court settlement. [4]USA Today

Jailed for 3 months

On 9 September 2010, Mayweather entered the house of his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, in the 3800 block of Tropical Vine Street, Las Vegas. It was alleged that he pulled her by the hair, slapped her, and also twisted her arm in front of his children aged 10 and 9.

Harris also alleged that he stole her phone and complained to the police after which Mayweather was arrested and spent 2 days in police custody before he was released after posting a $3000 bail. [5]Reuters

Defamation case by ex-girlfriend

In May 2015, Floyd Mayweather Jr's ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, filed a defamation case against him for $20 million. She filed the case in response to his comments in an interview that he was trying to calm her down on the morning of domestic violence in 2010 as she was on drugs. He claimed innocence in the interview and claimed that he did not beat her. The case was dismissed in 2020 after the death of Harris. [7]CNN

Legal battle with Shantel Jackson

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been in an on-and-off relationship with Shantel Jackson for 8 years before finally breaking up in 2013. In 2014, she accused him of domestic violence and battery after he came out of jail in 2012. She alleged that he beat her up, twisted her arm, and forced her to open her phone for him to check.

After breaking up with him, she started dating the rapper Nelly and when she posted a photo of them together, Mayweather threatened her to remove the photo from social media or he would leak her nude photos that he had taken without her knowledge. Mayweather later posted a photo of her ultrasound sonogram and wrote that he broke up with her as she aborted the pregnancy and killed their twins. [8]Business Standard

He later alleged that Jackson also recorded their phone recordings which she produced in the court. Jackson later alleged that he stole her jewellery worth $3 million which include a $2.5 million diamond ring, $250,000 diamond earrings, a $32,000 Chanel watch, a $100,000 diamond bracelet, and a $21,000 Louis Vuitton lock necklace. In 2021, Jackson dropped the lawsuit after reaching a settlement with Mayweather for an undisclosed amount.

Stripped of WBO Welterweight title

On 2 May 2015, he defeated Manny Pacquiao and won $220 million along with the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title. He was required to pay $200 thousand fees and vacate the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight titles; however, he did not pay and vacate the titles.
