Controversy | Misuse of political power Kalpana made headlines in August 2022 after her husband, Hemant Soren, was accused of misusing his power to assign a plot for his wife's business by the former chief minister Raghubar Das. When Hemant Soren took over as head of the Department of Commerce, Kalpana was given an 11-acre plot of land from the original plot pool reserved for tribal people, under which the tribal people could begin their industrial projects. Kalpana Soren runs Sohrai Private Limited, which was granted a plot in Ranchi's Barhe Industrial Park in 2022 for a meat processing plant. Some Lesser Known Facts About Kalpana Soren
- Kalpana Soren is an Indian businesswoman. She is married to Hemant Soren, an Indian politician belonging to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party. In January 2024, following her husband’s speculated arrest in a money laundering case, she made headlines for being a potential candidate for the position of Jharkhand’s chief minister.
- She runs a private school and has regularly been spotted at kid-focused events and initiatives that support women’s empowerment.
- She is the daughter-in-law of Shibu Soren who is the chief of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party.
- On 31 December 2023, Sarfaraz Ahmed, a Gandey-based JMM MLA resigned from his position, citing personal reasons. This gave rise to rumours that Kalpana would take over as Jharkhand’s next chief minister and that Sarfaraz Ahmed had purposefully left the seat empty, so Kalpana could run in the Gandey bypoll elections. In a tweet, Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP from Jharkhand’s Godda, said,
The new year “could bring pain to the Soren family”. Jharkhand’s MLA from Gandey, Sarfaraz Ahmed, has resigned from the Assembly and his resignation has been accepted. Soon, Hemant Soren-ji will also resign from the post of chief minister and his wife, Kalpana Soren-ji, will take over as the next CM.”
This action was taken in response to Hemant Soren‘s seventh summon by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act case. The ED, in its summon, stated,
Since you have not come to the office of the Directorate of Enforcement in obedience to the summonses issued to you, we are giving you this last opportunity to record your statement under section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, at the place, date and time, mutually convenient to you as well as the undersigned (ED), which should be within 7 days of receipt of this notice/Summons.”
In January 2024, rumours about her becoming the chief minister became more intense as her husband, Hemant Soren, was summoned by the ED in a land fraud case. However, Champai Soren was later named as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
