Controversies | • Misuse of political power In January 2022, 157 judges from the Calcutta High Court wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Chief Justice of West Bengal HC Prakash Shrivastava, and Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, accusing Kalyan Banerjee of disregarding women lawyers, granting undue privilege to some women in exchange for inexplicable favours, and abusing his political power. The attorneys also alleged that he disregarded the governor, the state's highest constitutional authority, by making demeaning public remarks about him. [2]The Print • Row over mocking Jagdeep Dhankhar On 19 December 2023, Kalyan Banerjee hit the headlines for mimicking the Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar while the opposition party had gathered to protest the suspension of Members of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi was seen recording the video when Kalyan made fun of Dhankar's physical limitations. Later, lawyer Abhishek Gautam lodged a complaint at the Defence Colony Police Station, accusing Kalyan of defaming and insulting the Vice-President of India, his caste, and his farming background. He requested that an FIR be registered against the TMC MP under the relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act. Later, Dhankar addressed the issue in the parliament and said, "As an individual, take on me, don’t take on my background as a farmer, don’t take on my background as a community member. Institution of Chairman has been ravaged and that too by a political party that has gone so far that a Member of Parliament, a senior one, videographs the other member." [3]YouTube - The Indian Express Kalyan then issued a statement and said, "I am a member of the Lok Sabha. I have never seen Rajya Sabha proceedings or Rajya Sabha TV. How will I be able to copy Dhankharji? I am surprised he took it personally. Does he behave like this only? This is an art and he should take it sportingly." • Suspension over inappropriate behaviour He hit the headlines in October 2024 after he was suspended from the Parliamentary Committee for a day by the speaker of the Lok Sabha after he lost his temperament at a meeting discussing the Waqf Bill. During the meeting, he got angry and smashed a glass bottle on the table which led him to sustain injuries on his hand and thumb as well. |
